Confirm Core Personal Information
The simplest mistakes are often the most common. Before you hit submit, take a moment to verify your most basic details. Ensure your name, date of birth, and Permanent Account Number (PAN) are entered exactly as they appear on your PAN card. Even a minor
spelling error can cause a mismatch during processing. Also, confirm that your contact information, including your email address and mobile number, is current. The Income Tax Department uses this information to send important communications, including OTPs for verification and notices if any issues arise. An outdated phone number could lock you out of your account or delay the verification process.
Verify PAN and Aadhaar Linkage
Linking your PAN with your Aadhaar is mandatory for filing your income tax return. An unlinked PAN can become inoperative, leading to higher TDS rates and complications in filing. Before you proceed, double-check that your PAN and Aadhaar are successfully linked. You can verify the status on the official income tax e-filing portal. Mismatches in your name or date of birth between the two documents are a common reason for linking failures, so ensure the details are identical on both. Rectifying this is a crucial first step.
Pre-Validate Your Bank Account
If you are expecting a tax refund, this step is non-negotiable. The income tax refund is credited only to a pre-validated bank account linked with your PAN. Log in to the e-filing portal and check the status of your bank accounts. Ensure the account you wish to receive the refund in is not only listed but also marked as 'Validated'. Double-check the account number and IFSC code for absolute accuracy. An incorrect or non-validated account is one of the primary reasons for refund delays or failures. Taking a few minutes to confirm this can save you months of waiting.
Select the Correct ITR Form
Choosing the wrong Income Tax Return (ITR) form is a frequent error that can get your return marked as 'defective' by the tax department. This means you will have to file a corrected return, causing unnecessary delays. The correct form depends entirely on your sources of income. For instance, a salaried individual with no other income might use ITR-1, but if they have capital gains from selling stocks or mutual funds, they would need to use ITR-2. Similarly, income from a business or profession requires ITR-3. Carefully review your income profile for the financial year 2025-26 to ensure you've selected the appropriate form before you start filling in the details.
Reconcile with Form 26AS and AIS
Your tax return is not filed in a vacuum. The Income Tax Department already has a significant amount of your financial data in Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement (AIS). Form 26AS is your tax passbook, showing all the tax deducted at source (TDS) on your behalf. The AIS provides a more comprehensive view of your financial transactions, including interest income, dividends, and property sales. Before finalising your return, you must cross-reference the income you've declared with the information in these documents. A mismatch is a red flag that can trigger an automated notice from the tax department, leading to scrutiny.
Don't Forget to E-Verify
Filing your return is only half the job. The process is not complete until you have verified it. You have 30 days from the date of filing to e-verify your return. If you miss this deadline, your ITR will be considered 'invalid', as if it was never filed in the first place. This can lead to penalties for non-filing. The easiest way to verify is electronically using an Aadhaar OTP or through your net banking portal. Make sure you complete this final, critical step as soon as you submit your return.
