Beyond the Bunny Hop
The iconic images from the Apollo missions feature astronauts bouncing and hopping across the lunar surface. While charming, this stiff-legged shuffle was a necessity born of limitation. The Apollo-era suits, marvels of their time, were rigid and difficult
to move in, making simple tasks like bending over to pick up a rock a major physical effort. For the ambitious Artemis program, which aims to establish a long-term scientific presence on the Moon, a simple hop just won't do. Astronauts need to be able to walk naturally, kneel, twist, and use complex tools. They must become true field geologists on another world, and that requires a suit built for mobility.
Designing for a New Destination
The Artemis missions are targeting the Moon's south pole, a region vastly different from the equatorial sites visited by Apollo crews. This area is a landscape of extremes, with rugged craters, steep slopes, and areas of permanent shadow where temperatures can plummet to below -200 degrees Celsius. The abrasive, glass-like lunar dust, or regolith, is another major hazard that can wear down materials and clog mechanisms. The new suits must therefore provide protection from these harsh conditions while offering a degree of movement that allows astronauts to safely navigate the challenging and scientifically valuable terrain.
Introducing the AxEMU
To meet these challenges, NASA has partnered with Axiom Space to develop the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU. This next-generation spacesuit is less a piece of clothing and more a personalized spacecraft. Building on years of NASA's own prototype research, the AxEMU incorporates advanced bearings in the joints of the waist, arms, and legs. These innovations will allow astronauts a much greater range of motion, enabling them to walk, bend, and crouch with an ease their predecessors could only dream of. The suit is also designed to be highly adjustable, fitting a broader range of male and female astronaut body types than ever before. Another key upgrade is the rear-entry hatch, allowing astronauts to climb into the suit from the back, a significant design change from previous models.
More Than Just a Suit
The AxEMU is an entire life-support system. It provides oxygen, scrubs carbon dioxide, and manages temperature in the vacuum of space. Enhanced protection will shield astronauts from the extreme cold of permanently shadowed craters and the punishing radiation of space. For the Artemis III mission, the suit's outer layer will be white to reflect the intense sunlight and help regulate the internal temperature. This high-tech garment will empower astronauts to conduct more complex and valuable science. With increased dexterity, they can better handle specialized tools, collect diverse geological samples, and venture further from their lander, maximizing the scientific return of each lunar excursion.
The Road to the Moonwalk
Developing a suit for the Moon is a painstaking process. The AxEMU has been undergoing extensive testing, with engineers and astronauts simulating lunar tasks in underwater environments like NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, which mimics the feeling of lunar gravity. These tests are crucial for evaluating the suit's mobility, functionality, and safety before it's cleared for flight. Though development has faced schedule adjustments, NASA and Axiom Space are working to deliver the suits for the Artemis III mission. When the first woman and next man step onto the lunar south pole, they will be wearing what represents a giant leap in spacesuit technology, enabling a new era of exploration.
