A Faster Overnight Journey
Indian Railways is preparing to launch its second Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, connecting Mumbai and Bengaluru with a crucial stop in Pune. This new service, set for a potential inauguration on November 1, 2026, aims to drastically cut travel time. While
existing trains can take over 22 hours for the full Mumbai-Bengaluru route, the Vande Bharat sleeper is expected to complete the journey in approximately 16 hours. For Pune-based travellers, this translates to a faster and more comfortable overnight option to Bengaluru, potentially reducing the current 18-to-20-hour journey by several hours, depending on the final schedule.
Inside the Vande Bharat Sleeper
This isn't just a faster train; it's a new class of travel. The 16-coach, fully air-conditioned train will accommodate 823 passengers in a three-class configuration: AC First Class, AC Two-Tier, and AC Three-Tier. Designed for long-distance overnight comfort, the train features ergonomically designed, cushioned berths, automatic doors, and fully sealed gangways for a quieter, cleaner journey. Passengers can expect modern amenities like individual reading lights, mobile charging points, and bio-vacuum toilets. For enhanced safety, the train is equipped with the indigenous 'Kavach' anti-collision system and CCTV surveillance.
Connecting India's Economic Powerhouses
The Mumbai-Pune-Bengaluru corridor is one of India's most vital economic arteries, home to a massive concentration of IT, finance, and manufacturing industries. The high demand for travel between these cities currently relies on a mix of flights, buses, and often overbooked trains. The new Vande Bharat sleeper is positioned as a comfortable and efficient alternative, allowing travellers to board at night and arrive the next day, saving a productive day otherwise lost in transit. The proposed route includes stops at key stations like Kalyan, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Guntakal, enhancing connectivity across Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.
What to Expect Next
While an inaugural run is proposed for November 1 to coincide with Karnataka Rajyotsava, the official start date for regular commercial services has not yet been announced. Indian Railways is still to release the final timetable, fare structure, and when ticket reservations will open. Preliminary schedules suggest the train will run six days a week, with one day reserved for maintenance. Proposed timings indicate a late-evening departure from both Mumbai and Bengaluru. For Pune passengers heading to Bengaluru, this could mean a post-midnight boarding time, a detail many will be watching for in the final schedule.
