What Are UPI AutoPay Mandates?
UPI AutoPay, also known as a UPI mandate, is a powerful feature that allows merchants and service providers to automatically collect recurring payments from your bank account. You authorise it once with your UPI PIN for things like OTT subscriptions,
mobile bills, loan EMIs, and more. While convenient, it is easy to lose track of active mandates, leading to unexpected charges for services you have stopped using. Regularly reviewing these authorisations is a crucial step in managing your digital finances.
How to Find and Cancel Mandates on PhonePe
PhonePe provides a straightforward way to manage your automatic payments. First, open the app and tap on your profile picture in the top-left corner. Under the 'Payment Settings' section, select 'AutoPay'. This screen will show you a list of all your active mandates. Tap on the specific subscription you wish to stop. You will see an option to 'Cancel Mandate' or 'Remove AutoPay'. Tap it and confirm the cancellation by entering your UPI PIN. The mandate will be revoked, stopping all future payments for that service.
How to Find and Cancel Mandates on Google Pay
On Google Pay, begin by tapping your profile picture at the top-right of the screen. From there, select 'Autopay'. This will open a dashboard showing your mandates, typically sorted into tabs like 'Live' and 'Pending'. Tap on the 'Live' tab to see all your active subscriptions. Select the mandate you want to deactivate. You will find options to either 'Pause autopay' for a specific duration or 'Cancel autopay' permanently. Choose to cancel and enter your UPI PIN to confirm the action. The status of the mandate in your app should then change to 'Canceled'.
How to Find and Cancel Mandates on Paytm
For Paytm users, the process is just as simple. Open the app and tap on your profile icon or the main menu, usually on the top-left. Navigate to 'UPI & Payment Settings'. Inside this menu, look for an option named 'Automatic Payments' or 'UPI Mandates'. This section will list all the recurring payments you have authorised. Select the mandate you no longer need. Look for a button that says 'Cancel Automatic Payment' or 'Delete Automatic Payment'. You may be asked to provide a reason before proceeding. Confirm your choice and enter your UPI PIN to finalise the cancellation.
A Central Place to Check Everything
If you use multiple apps and want to see all your mandates in one place, there is a solution. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) runs a central portal: upihelp.npci.org.in. By logging in with your UPI-linked mobile number and an OTP, you can view a consolidated list of every active mandate linked to your account, regardless of which app you used to create it. From this dashboard, you can directly 'Revoke' any mandate you no longer need, acting as a universal kill switch for unwanted subscriptions.
Make It a Financial Habit
Cancelling unused subscriptions is not a one-time task. It's a healthy financial habit. Set a reminder to review your active mandates every few months, perhaps quarterly. This regular check-up takes only a few minutes but can save you a significant amount of money over the year by preventing 'subscription creep'. Always remember to cancel the mandate within the payment app itself, as simply deleting the merchant's app from your phone will not stop the automatic debits. This proactive approach ensures you are only paying for the services you actively use and value.
