Initial reports in late 2023 and early 2024 pointed towards a collaboration with director Sujoy Ghosh, known for thrillers like 'Kahaani' and 'Badla'. The project, tentatively titled 'King', was envisioned as a slick action film. The most exciting rumour to emerge was that it would feature Shah Rukh Khan alongside his daughter, Suhana Khan, in her theatrical debut after her appearance in the 2023 streaming film 'The Archies'.
A Change in Direction
By late 2024, reports confirmed a significant creative shift. Sujoy Ghosh stepped away from the director's chair, and Siddharth Anand, who directed SRK's blockbuster 'Pathaan', took over as director. Anand, known for large-scale action entertainers like 'War' and 'Pathaan', would also co-produce the film under his banner Marflix Pictures, alongside SRK's Red Chillies Entertainment. This change signaled a move towards an even grander, more explosive action spectacle, with the screenplay credited to both Anand and Ghosh, among others.
Assembling a Powerhouse Cast
With the father-daughter duo at its core, the film's cast grew into a star-studded ensemble. Abhishek Bachchan was reportedly roped in to play the primary antagonist. The film is also set to feature a reunion with frequent co-stars Deepika Padukone and Rani Mukerji. The extensive cast reportedly includes veteran actors like Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff, along with talents such as Jaideep Ahlawat and Arshad Warsi.
Filming Across the Globe
Principal photography was slated to begin around May 2025. The production plan for 'King' has been ambitious, with filming schedules spanning multiple international locations to give the action a distinctive visual appeal. After shooting in Mumbai, the crew reportedly filmed sequences in Cape Town, South Africa, and had plans for a major European schedule. More recent reports from July 2026 indicated the team was planning its final international leg in the United States and South America before heading into post-production.
The Story So Far
While the plot is tightly under wraps, it is understood to be an action thriller centered on a mentor-protégé relationship. Shah Rukh Khan is said to play a skilled assassin, with Suhana Khan as his apprentice navigating a dangerous world under his guidance. Reports have also suggested the narrative will unfold across two different timelines, with SRK playing the same character at different stages of his life, facing off against different antagonists in each era.
Locked for Christmas 2026
Despite a packed holiday season with major Hollywood releases, Shah Rukh Khan has personally put all postponement rumours to rest. During an #AskSRK session on social media platform X in September 2026, he confirmed that 'King' is on track and will hit theatres as planned. He announced the official release date as December 24, 2026. The superstar also acknowledged that he suffered a few injuries during the shoot, but assured fans that everything was fixed and the film was nearly complete.
