The secret to Havelock's spectacular autumn diving season lies in the weather. The heavy monsoon rains from June to September wash nutrients into the sea, but can also bring rough conditions and reduced visibility. Come October, as the southwest monsoon pulls
back, the seas begin to settle. This transitional period is a game-changer for divers. The winds calm down, the churning subsides, and the sediment that clouds the water column settles. The result is a dramatic improvement in underwater visibility, which can extend from 15 to an incredible 30 metres. This phenomenon transforms the Andaman Sea into a vast, crystal-clear aquarium, setting the stage for unforgettable underwater encounters. The water temperature remains a comfortable 28-30°C, perfect for long, relaxed dives.
A Vibrant, Rejuvenated Ecosystem
The post-monsoon period isn't just about clear water; it's about life. The nutrient-rich waters from the preceding rains lead to a rejuvenated and replenished marine ecosystem. Deeper pinnacles and walls, such as Johnny's Gorge and Dixon's Pinnacle, become more accessible. While the entire diving season in Havelock runs from October to May, the autumn months of October and November occupy a special 'sweet spot'. This period offers the superb visibility and calm seas of the peak season but without the crowds that arrive from December onwards. Booking your trip during these months often means more personalized attention from dive centres, emptier dive boats, and greater flexibility with your plans. You get to experience the island's underwater wonders in a more serene and intimate setting. The landscape on the island itself is also particularly beautiful, still lush and green from the recent rains, making the boat rides to dive sites a visual treat.
