The New Route: An Overview
Air India will be the only carrier to offer direct, nonstop service between Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). This seasonal route is scheduled to operate three times per week
from October 25, 2026, through March 26, 2027. The airline will use an upgraded Boeing 777-300ER aircraft for these flights. This aircraft is configured with a three-class layout: eight First Class suites, 40 Business Class flat-bed seats, and 280 seats in Economy Class, offering nearly 2,000 seats weekly on this new corridor.
Checked Baggage Explained
Understanding baggage policies for long-haul international flights is crucial to avoid expensive surprises. For flights between India and Canada, airlines like Air India typically use the "piece concept." For Economy Class passengers on this new Mumbai-Toronto route, the standard allowance is generous: two checked bags, each weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs). Business Class passengers receive an even greater allowance, usually two bags weighing up to 32 kg (70 lbs) each. The maximum dimension for any single bag is typically 158 cm (62 inches) when you add its length, width, and height. Always confirm the specific allowance tied to your fare when booking, as excess baggage fees on this route can be significant.
Carry-On and Personal Items
In addition to your checked luggage, you are permitted to bring items into the cabin. The standard carry-on allowance for most international carriers is one standard bag and one personal item. The standard bag must typically fit in the overhead bin, with dimensions around 55 x 40 x 23 cm. Your personal item, such as a laptop bag, purse, or small backpack, must fit under the seat in front of you. While some airlines do not specify a strict weight limit for carry-on bags, you must be able to lift it into the overhead compartment yourself. The new Air India 777-300ERs are also equipped with onboard Wi-Fi, so keeping your devices in your carry-on is a good idea.
Navigating Onward Connections
This new nonstop flight is a game-changer, but many travellers will still need to connect to or from other cities. Air India has confirmed that passengers traveling on this route will have access to seamless onward connections through its hubs in both Mumbai and Delhi. This means you can book a single itinerary from cities like Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad to Toronto. As a member of the Star Alliance, Air India's network allows for easy connections to other carriers. When your entire journey is on a single ticket, your checked baggage will typically be transferred automatically to your final destination. However, when arriving in Canada for the first time, you may need to claim your bags at Toronto to clear customs before re-checking them for a connecting domestic flight.
Tips for a Smooth Journey
To make your travel experience as smooth as possible, a little preparation goes a long way. First, double-check your baggage allowance directly on the Air India website using your booking reference before you pack. If you know you'll need extra baggage, it is almost always cheaper to purchase it online in advance rather than at the airport counter. Weigh your bags at home to ensure they are within the limits. For your carry-on, pack any essential medications, a change of clothes, and valuables. Finally, since this is a new and popular route, especially during the festive season, arrive at the airport with plenty of time to check in, clear security, and get to your gate without rushing.
