Perfect Your Base with Smart Skin Prep
Long-lasting makeup begins before a single drop of foundation is applied. The key to controlling how your makeup wears in humidity is managing oil and moisture from the very start. Begin by washing your face with a gentle cleanser to remove any excess
oil and create a clean canvas. Even in humid weather, your skin needs hydration; skipping moisturiser can cause your skin to overproduce oil. The trick is to choose a lightweight, oil-free, or gel-based moisturiser that absorbs quickly without leaving a heavy film. Give it a minute to fully sink in before moving to the next step. For sun protection, opt for a gel or mineral-based sunscreen that won't feel greasy under your makeup.
Don't You Dare Skip Primer
If you want your makeup to withstand heat and humidity, primer is non-negotiable. It acts as a crucial barrier between your skin and your foundation, giving the makeup something to grip onto while controlling shine. For humid conditions, it's best to avoid dewy or hydrating primers. Instead, reach for a mattifying or pore-minimising formula. These primers are specifically designed to absorb excess oil and create a smooth, shine-free surface that will dramatically extend the life of your foundation. Apply it with your fingertips, focusing on the T-zone and any other areas where you tend to get oily.
Choose Your Foundation Wisely
Heavy, full-coverage foundation is often the first thing to look cakey or slide around in the heat. The modern approach to a humidity-proof base is 'less is more'. Consider swapping your heavy foundation for a lighter alternative like a tinted moisturiser, a BB cream, or a water-based skin tint. If you require more coverage, look for foundations labelled as long-wearing, transfer-resistant, or waterproof. Silicone-based formulas often create a better barrier against moisture than water-based ones. Another excellent option for monsoon season is a powder foundation, which gives coverage without feeling heavy or wet on the skin.
Layer Creams and Powders for Longevity
One of the most effective professional techniques for locking in your makeup is layering products. This applies especially to cheek colour. Cream blushes and bronzers are fantastic for hot weather as they melt into the skin for a natural finish, but they can fade. To give them staying power, apply your cream blush or bronzer first, then lightly set it with a matching powder product on top. This 'sandwich' method helps to lock the colour in place for hours, preventing it from disappearing as you sweat.
Waterproof Your Eyes Completely
The dreaded 'raccoon eye' from smudged mascara and eyeliner is a common humidity woe. To avoid this, switching to waterproof formulas is essential. Start with an eyeshadow primer, which is specifically designed for the oily nature of eyelids and will prevent your shadow from creasing. Follow up with a waterproof or water-resistant liquid or gel eyeliner. For mascara, look for formulas that are explicitly waterproof or tubing mascaras, which create water-resistant tubes around each lash that won't smudge or flake.
Set It, Then Forget It
The final step is arguably the most important for sealing your look. You have two main tools: setting powder and setting spray. A light dusting of translucent setting powder is great for absorbing oil, especially in the T-zone. The 'baking' technique, where you let a generous amount of powder sit on oily areas for a few minutes before brushing it away, can offer even more oil control. After powdering, a setting spray is your final shield. It works by melting all the layers of makeup together for a seamless, skin-like finish and locking them in place. For maximum hold in high humidity, a mattifying setting spray is your best bet.
