Securing Your Entry Permit
A trip to Lakshadweep begins not with a ticket, but with a permit. To preserve its fragile ecosystem, entry is regulated for all non-islanders, including Indian citizens. The process is now streamlined through the official ePermit online portal. Applicants
must provide basic personal information, a valid ID like an Aadhaar card, a passport-size photograph, and details of their travel itinerary, including dates and the specific islands they plan to visit. The good news for tourists is that as of recent updates, a local sponsor or a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is no longer required for tourist applications, as security verification is handled internally. However, it is crucial to apply at least two weeks in advance to avoid any delays.
Getting There: Flights and Sea Voyages
Kochi serves as the primary gateway to Lakshadweep. The quickest way to reach the islands is by air. Alliance Air operates regular flights from Cochin International Airport (COK) to Agatti Airport (AGX), the sole airstrip in the archipelago. The flight takes approximately one and a half hours. From Agatti, inter-island transfers to places like Kavaratti and Bangaram are available via boat or helicopter, depending on the season. For a more leisurely journey, several passenger ships operate from Kochi, including the MV Kavaratti and MV Arabian Sea. This sea voyage can take between 14 to 18 hours, offering various classes of accommodation onboard. Booking through the official tourism body, SPORTS (Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports), often bundles transport and accommodation.
Underwater Paradise: Top Scuba Spots
Lakshadweep is a world-class destination for scuba diving, thanks to its pristine coral reefs and incredible marine biodiversity. The calm, clear waters offer visibility that can extend up to 30 metres, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced divers. Agatti Island is a popular entry point with shallow lagoons perfect for introductory dives where you can spot colourful fish, stingrays, and sea turtles. Nearby Bangaram Atoll is famous for its vibrant coral gardens and the chance to see reef sharks and manta rays. Kadmat Island offers long, narrow reefs and even a shipwreck to explore. The capital, Kavaratti, boasts a diverse range of dive sites and a marine aquarium. Most islands catering to tourists have PADI-certified dive centres that provide equipment and training.
Conscious Stays: Eco-Friendly Resorts
Tourism in Lakshadweep is built around the principles of ecotourism, with resorts designed to minimize their environmental impact. The accommodation options focus on connecting guests with nature. Bangaram Island features resorts known for their rustic charm and beautiful lagoons, offering a true escape from the mainland. On Thinnakara Island, some newer resorts offer luxury tents and shell-shaped rooms powered entirely by solar energy, each with private decks overlooking the lagoon. Government-run resorts operated by SPORTS are available on islands like Kadmat, Kavaratti, and Minicoy, often as part of tour packages. These stays emphasize a simple, serene experience, allowing the natural beauty of the white-sand beaches and coconut groves to take centre stage.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Lakshadweep is between October and mid-May. During these months, the weather is pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 27°C to 32°C, and the sea is calm and clear, making it perfect for water sports and diving. This period falls outside the heavy monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September. The monsoon brings heavy rainfall and rough seas, leading to the suspension of most tourist activities and transport services. Travelling during the peak dry season ensures you can fully experience the stunning beauty and outdoor activities that make the islands a unique destination.
