The New Non-Stop Connection
Air India has announced a new seasonal service connecting Mumbai directly with Toronto, becoming the only carrier to operate this non-stop route for the upcoming winter season. The flights will operate three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays,
beginning October 25, 2026, and running through March 26, 2027. This new service will be flown on a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which features upgraded cabins across First, Business, and Economy classes. For travellers, this means the end of navigating layovers in Delhi, the Middle East, or Europe, drastically simplifying the journey to Canada's largest city.
What This Means For Your Travel Time
The primary benefit of this direct service is the significant time saved. Journeys that previously required at least one stop and could stretch from 18 to 24 hours can now be completed in approximately 16 hours. A typical flight will depart Mumbai in the early morning and arrive in Toronto the same morning, local time. This not only reduces travel fatigue but also provides a more streamlined experience for families with children, elderly passengers, and business professionals on a tight schedule. By eliminating the stress of connecting flights, layover logistics, and potential delays, the service makes Canada more accessible than ever for those based in western India.
Navigating Canadian Visa Requirements
With the flight plan sorted, the next crucial step is your visa. Indian passport holders require a visitor visa, officially known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), to enter Canada for tourism. It is important to note that Canada does not offer a visa-on-arrival for Indian citizens; you must secure your visa before you travel. The application process is done online and requires you to prove that you have sufficient funds for your trip and strong ties to India that ensure your return. Most applicants will also need to provide biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) at a designated application centre. Processing times can vary, so it is highly recommended to start your application well in advance of your planned travel dates.
Planning Your Itinerary: Toronto and Beyond
Toronto is a vibrant, multicultural hub and a perfect starting point for exploring Eastern Canada. Once there, you can visit iconic landmarks like the CN Tower, explore diverse neighbourhoods, and enjoy world-class museums and dining. The direct flight makes planning short trips easier, and a must-do excursion is a day trip to the magnificent Niagara Falls, located just a 90-minute drive from the city. Given Canada's vast size, first-time visitors are often advised to focus on one region. With Toronto as your base, you could also explore the francophone charm of Montreal and the historic beauty of Quebec City by train or a short internal flight.
Best Time to Travel and What to Expect
The new direct service operates during Canada's winter, from late October to late March. This period is ideal for those who wish to experience a true Canadian winter, with opportunities for ice skating, winter festivals, and the chance to see snow-covered landscapes. However, be prepared for cold temperatures. For those who prefer milder weather, planning a trip between June and August offers warm summer days perfect for outdoor activities, though it is the peak tourist season with higher prices. A great alternative is the autumn shoulder season in September and October, which boasts pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and stunning fall foliage.
