For decades, travelling with more luggage than the free allowance meant a separate, often time-consuming, trip to the station's parcel office. Passengers had to arrive early, deal with manual paperwork, and wait in long queues, adding a layer of uncertainty
and hassle to their journey. The new system, launched on July 31, 2026, digitizes this entire process. It integrates excess luggage booking directly with the online ticket reservation system, allowing passengers with confirmed tickets to declare and pay for their extra bags from home. This shift is designed to reduce waiting times, eliminate redundant paperwork, and ease congestion at stations.
How to Book Excess Luggage Online
The service is accessible through the official Indian Railways Parcel Portal (www.parcel.indianrail.gov.in). Passengers need to enter their journey details, such as their PNR number, to begin. The portal then allows you to declare the weight of your excess luggage. It automatically calculates the applicable charges based on the weight and distance of your travel. After making the payment online, you receive a digital receipt, which is necessary for collecting your baggage at the destination. While the booking is initiated online, you will likely still need to present the luggage at the station's parcel office for final weighing and to have it loaded. The system also provides crucial information upfront, including a list of restricted items and penalty rules for undeclared luggage.
Tracking Your Luggage in Real-Time
A key feature of this modernization is the ability to track your luggage. The system is part of a broader upgrade to the Parcel Management System, which utilizes barcoding for each consignment. Once your luggage is booked and processed, it is assigned a barcode that is scanned at various points. This allows you to monitor its journey in real-time through the parcel website or a dedicated mobile app. Passengers will also receive SMS updates on their registered mobile number at different stages, from booking and loading to unloading and arrival at the destination, offering unprecedented transparency.
Understanding the Luggage Rules
The online booking system adheres to existing luggage regulations. The free allowance varies by class: 70 kg for AC First Class, 50 kg for AC 2-Tier and First Class, 40 kg for Sleeper Class, and 35 kg for Second Class. If your luggage exceeds this free limit, you must pay for the excess weight at a rate of 1.5 times the normal luggage fee. The maximum permissible weight also depends on your travel class. For example, a Sleeper Class passenger can carry up to 80 kg after paying charges, while an AC First Class passenger can carry up to 150 kg. It's important to note that for AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, the free allowance and the maximum limit are the same (40 kg), so this online excess booking facility is generally not available for these classes.
