Indian Railways has begun replacing its nearly 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) with a next-generation, cloud-based platform. The goal is to tackle the biggest complaint from passengers: system crashes and slow performance during high-demand
periods like the Tatkal window or festival seasons. The new system is a massive leap in capacity, designed to handle over 1,50,000 ticket bookings per minute—a nearly five-fold increase from the previous capacity of about 32,000. It will also manage a tenfold increase in passenger enquiries, from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh per minute. This upgrade, which began its phased rollout in August 2026, aims to make the booking process faster, more reliable, and fairer for everyone.
How This Tames the Peak-Season Rush
The primary benefit of the enhanced capacity is stability during extreme traffic spikes. Historically, the Tatkal booking window—10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC—would cause the system to slow down or fail, leaving millions frustrated. The new PRS is built to absorb this sudden surge, meaning fewer payment failures, faster page loads, and a smoother overall experience. While the system doesn't create more seats on its own, its efficiency ensures that the available inventory is sold without the system itself becoming a bottleneck. This is crucial as nearly 89% of all reserved tickets are now booked online. For passengers, this translates to a less stressful and more predictable booking process, even when competing with lakhs of others for a limited number of seats.
Smarter Features and a New Look
Alongside the backend upgrade, travellers will notice changes on the front end. A revamped IRCTC website, which entered its beta phase in July 2026, offers a simplified interface and fewer steps to book a ticket. The new portal is designed to integrate seamlessly with the upgraded PRS. Furthermore, Indian Railways is leveraging artificial intelligence to improve the passenger experience. One of the most useful new features is a highly accurate waitlist confirmation predictor. The AI-powered tool now boasts a 94% accuracy rate in forecasting whether a waitlisted ticket will be confirmed, allowing travellers to make more informed decisions about their journey. The new system will also support a multilingual interface, making it more accessible to users across the country.
Tips for Successful Booking
While the new system is more robust, the demand for tickets remains incredibly high. To maximize your chances, preparation is still key. First, ensure your IRCTC account is linked with your Aadhaar, as this is now mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets and may be required for other quotas. Have your passenger details, including names, ages, and ID numbers, saved in the 'My Master List' feature on the IRCTC website beforehand. This allows you to auto-fill the information in seconds. During peak booking hours, especially for Tatkal, a stable, high-speed internet connection is non-negotiable. Even with the system upgrades, milliseconds can make the difference between a confirmed ticket and a spot on the waitlist. Also, be aware of other measures like running special 'clone' or festival trains, which provide additional capacity on high-demand routes.

This technology overhaul is part of a broader strategy by Indian Railways to modernise its services. Together, these measures aim to create a more efficient and passenger-friendly railway ecosystem.
