The Rise of Silent Debits
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionised how India transacts, and its AutoPay feature is a prime example of its convenience. Designed for recurring payments like OTT subscriptions, utility bills, EMIs, and mutual fund SIPs, UPI AutoPay allows
you to authorise a one-time mandate for future debits. This eliminates the hassle of remembering due dates and making manual payments. However, this convenience comes with a catch. Many users approve mandates, especially for free trials or discounted offers, and then forget about them. These small, seemingly insignificant authorisations can transform into regular monthly deductions long after you've stopped using a service, leading to a phenomenon known as 'subscription creep' or 'silent debits'. These charges, while often technically authorised by you, can add up, creating unexpected financial strain.
What is a 'Digital Wallet Audit'?
The term 'digital wallet audit' isn't a formal banking procedure but a simple, proactive financial health check-up you can perform yourself. Think of it as spring cleaning for your digital finances. It involves regularly reviewing your active UPI AutoPay mandates and transaction history to ensure every debit from your account is for a service you actively use and value. The goal is to identify and eliminate financial leaks caused by forgotten subscriptions, post-trial charges, or services you no longer need. Just as you would review a credit card statement for suspicious charges, a wallet audit applies the same diligence to the automated world of UPI payments.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Your Audit
Performing a digital wallet audit is straightforward and can be done in a few minutes. A good habit is to do this once a month. 1. Locate Your Mandates: Open your primary UPI app (like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm). Navigate to the section for automated payments. This may be labelled 'AutoPay', 'Mandates', or 'Subscriptions'. 2. Review All Active Mandates: Here, you will find a list of all the recurring payments you have authorised. The list will show the merchant's name, the maximum amount that can be debited, and the payment frequency. 3. Identify and Question: Go through the list and ask yourself for each mandate: Do I still use this service? Is the cost still justified? Did I know this was active? Pay close attention to services you signed up for as a free trial. 4. Cancel, Pause, or Revoke: For any subscription you no longer need, use the 'Cancel', 'Revoke', or 'Delete' option within the app. Most apps will require you to enter your UPI PIN to confirm the cancellation, which stops all future debits for that mandate. Some apps also offer a 'Pause' option, which is useful if you want to halt payments temporarily. 5. Cross-Check with Bank Statements: For extra thoroughness, compare the active mandates with your bank account statement to ensure no unlisted debits are slipping through.
Where Hidden Fees Often Hide
Unexpected charges are rarely a technical error; they are usually rooted in mandates we approve without fully reading the terms. The most common pitfall is the 'free trial' that requires a small, reversible payment (e.g., ₹1) to set up a mandate. Users often focus on the trial and miss that they are authorising a full-priced subscription to begin after the trial period ends. Another area is variable billing. While UPI AutoPay supports variable amounts up to a pre-approved cap, you might not notice gradual price increases from a service provider unless you are actively checking your debit notifications. Finally, simply forgetting a subscription is the most common reason for unwanted charges. Uninstalling an app from your phone does not cancel the payment mandate associated with it.
Proactive Tips for Financial Hygiene
Beyond regular audits, you can adopt smarter habits to prevent unwanted charges in the first place. Read Before Approving: Before entering your UPI PIN to approve any mandate, carefully read the details on the authorisation screen: merchant name, debit frequency, and maximum amount. Set Reminders: When signing up for a free trial, immediately set a calendar reminder for a few days before the trial ends. This gives you time to evaluate the service and cancel the mandate if you don't wish to continue. Use a Dedicated Account: Consider linking UPI AutoPay mandates to a secondary bank account with a limited balance. This acts as a firewall, preventing a large, unexpected debit from impacting your primary funds. Keep Notifications On: Don't ignore pre-debit notifications sent by your UPI app at least 24 hours before a payment. These alerts are your last chance to review a charge and cancel the mandate if necessary.
