The UPI and Credit Card Link-Up
For years, UPI payments drew funds directly from your bank account, offering convenience but no rewards. Credit card spends, on the other hand, offered a treasure trove of points and miles. The game changed when the National Payments Corporation of India
(NPCI) enabled RuPay credit cards to be linked with UPI platforms. This means you can now scan any merchant QR code and pay using your credit line, all while accumulating valuable reward points on transactions that were previously unrewarded. This simple but powerful feature has unlocked a new way for savvy spenders to make their money work harder.
Choose the Right RuPay Credit Card
Not all credit cards are created equal, and the first step is choosing one that aligns with your travel goals. Your choice generally falls into two categories: airline co-branded cards or general travel cards. Airline co-branded cards, like the Yatra SBI Card or Tata Neu Infinity HDFC Bank Credit Card, are directly linked to a specific airline's loyalty program. The points you earn, often called NeuCoins or miles, can be directly redeemed for flights on that airline or its partners. General travel cards, such as the Bank of Baroda Premier Card or certain IDFC First Bank variants, offer bank-specific reward points. These points provide more flexibility, as they can often be transferred to multiple airline loyalty programs or used to book flights and hotels directly through the bank's own travel portal. For UPI spends, it's crucial to pick the RuPay variant of these cards.
The Simple Setup: Linking Your Card
Getting started is surprisingly easy and takes just a few minutes. First, ensure you have a UPI-enabled app like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm installed and updated on your smartphone. Open the app and navigate to your payment settings or profile section, where you'll find an option to 'Add Payment Method' or 'Add RuPay Credit Card'. Select your card's issuing bank from the list. The app will automatically detect any eligible RuPay credit cards linked to your registered mobile number. Once you select the card, you'll verify it by entering the last few digits and expiry date, followed by an OTP sent to your phone. The final step is to set a 4 or 6-digit UPI PIN specifically for your credit card transactions. Once set, your card is ready to use.
Turn Daily Spends into Maximum Points
With your card linked, every merchant QR code becomes a point-earning opportunity. Think about your routine expenses: buying groceries at the local kirana store, paying for your meal at a restaurant, booking movie tickets, or paying for your cab ride. All these small, frequent payments, when routed through your UPI-linked credit card, start adding up. The strategy here is volume. While a single Rs. 200 transaction might not seem like much, accumulating these over a month can result in thousands of reward points. For example, the HDFC Bank UPI RuPay Credit Card offers accelerated rewards on categories like groceries and dining. This consistent, everyday spending forms the foundation of your points-earning engine.
Know the Rules: What Not to Do
It's crucial to understand that not all UPI transactions will earn you rewards. Card issuers typically exclude certain payment categories that have lower profit margins. Payments to other individuals (peer-to-peer transfers) are not eligible. Similarly, loading digital wallets, paying rent through third-party apps, and certain government or utility payments might not accrue any points. These exclusions are defined by Merchant Category Codes (MCCs), so a payment for 'real estate agents' (rent) will likely be excluded while a payment for 'groceries' will be included. Always read your card's terms and conditions to understand which transactions are eligible for rewards to avoid disappointment.
From Points to Planes: The Redemption Game
Accumulating points is only half the battle; redeeming them wisely is where you unlock real value. The most straightforward way is using your bank’s travel portal, where points can be used like cash to book flights. However, the most value often comes from transferring your points to an airline's frequent flyer program, like Vistara's Club Vistara or Air India's Flying Returns. For instance, a business class ticket that costs Rs. 70,000 in cash might be available for 50,000 miles plus taxes. This method requires more research, as you need to check for award seat availability and understand transfer ratios. But for those willing to put in the effort, it is the ultimate hack for flying for free.
