Devkund Waterfall: The Plunge Pool of the Gods
Tucked away near the village of Bhira in Raigad district, Devkund Waterfall is a true hidden gem. Getting there requires a trek of about two to three hours through a lush forest, complete with stream crossings and rocky patches, but the reward is immense.
The waterfall is a stunning 'plunge' type, dropping into a natural pool of crystal-clear, blue-green water. Often called the “Bathing Pond of the Gods,” its serene and almost mystical atmosphere makes the journey worthwhile. Located around 110 km from Pune and 170 km from Mumbai, it's an ideal one-day trek for those with a moderate fitness level. Note that local authorities often regulate access during peak monsoon months for safety, so it's wise to check conditions before you go.
Thoseghar Falls: A Roaring Spectacle
Located near Satara, Thoseghar is not a single waterfall but a series of them, creating a powerful and dramatic display. The main attraction is a cascade that plunges from a height of about 200 meters, making it one of the taller waterfalls in the region. A well-maintained viewing platform allows visitors to safely take in the breathtaking panorama of the falls and the lush green valley they carve out. The thunderous sound of the water and the sheer scale of the falls are what set Thoseghar apart. It's easily accessible by road, about 20 km from Satara city, making it a great option for families and those who prefer less trekking. The best time to visit is from July to November when the monsoon feeds the falls, turning them into a formidable force of nature.
Vajrai Waterfall: India's Three-Tiered Giant
For those seeking sheer scale, Vajrai Waterfall near the village of Bhambavali in Satara is a must-see. Often cited as one of India's tallest waterfalls, it cascades down in three tiers from a reported height of around 853 feet (260 meters). The Urmodi River is believed to originate from this perennial waterfall, which becomes incredibly spectacular during the monsoon. Unlike falls that require a trek to the base, the grandeur of Vajrai is often best appreciated from a distance. Swimming is prohibited due to the deep ponds it forms. The journey to this spot, approximately 28 km from Satara, takes you close to the famous Kaas Plateau, allowing you to combine two of the region's natural wonders in one trip.
Randha Falls: The Power of the Pravara River
In the Bhandardara region, about 117 km from Mumbai, lies the formidable Randha Falls. The Pravara River takes a mighty leap of 170 feet into a deep gorge, creating a spectacle of raw natural power. This waterfall is at its most impressive during the monsoon months, from June to September, when the river is swollen with rain. The area is well-developed for tourists, with viewing platforms and footbridges that offer excellent vantage points for photography and enjoying the view. It's a popular spot for a day picnic and serves as the main attraction for visitors to the Bhandardara area, which also includes the serene Arthur Lake and Wilson Dam.
