Lonavala and Khandala: The Twin Delights
The popular twin hill stations of Lonavala and Khandala are buzzing with activity as visitors flock to see their seasonal waterfalls. Bhushi Dam, a perennial favourite, is overflowing, creating a wide, stepped cascade that attracts large crowds, especially
on weekends. The best time to visit for a less crowded experience is on a weekday morning. Nearby, Kune Falls, one of the area's most famous waterfalls, is also in full flow, offering a spectacular sight. The entire belt is enveloped in mist, with temperatures hovering between 18°C and 24°C, making it a perfect cool-weather getaway just a short drive from Mumbai and Pune.
Bhandardara: The Land of Waterfalls
Nestled in Ahmednagar district, Bhandardara becomes a hotspot for nature lovers during the monsoon. The region is home to several powerful cascades, including the famous Randha Falls, where the Pravara River plunges 170 feet into a gorge. Another major attraction is the Umbrella Falls, which is best viewed during the peak rainy season. The area also features the unique phenomenon of a 'reverse waterfall' at Naneghat, where strong winds push the water spray upwards, creating a captivating illusion. Tourists flock here to witness this natural wonder and explore the historic Amruteshwar Temple. However, due to heavy rains, authorities have recently and temporarily closed access to some areas like the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary for safety.
Amboli Ghat: The Cherrapunji of Maharashtra
Known for receiving some of the highest rainfall in the state, Amboli Ghat in the Sindhudurg district transforms into a verdant paradise with numerous waterfalls. The main Amboli Waterfall and the thunderous Nangarta Falls are key attractions, drawing visitors with their impressive flow and misty surroundings. The region, part of a biodiversity heritage site, offers stunning valley views from points like Kavlesad, which are often shrouded in thick fog. The monsoon season, from June to September, is considered the absolute best time to experience Amboli's magical atmosphere.
Vihigaon and Dabhosa: For the Adventurous
For those seeking a thrill, Vihigaon Waterfall near Igatpuri, also known as Ashoka Waterfall, offers a 120-foot drop that is popular for rappelling during the monsoon. This seasonal fall is a well-liked weekend escape from both Mumbai and Nashik. Further afield, in Palghar district, the Dabhosa Waterfall is one of the state's tallest, plunging 300 feet. It's a perennial waterfall, but it swells to a powerful cascade during the rains, offering breathtaking views from a newly installed glass bridge.
A Note on Monsoon Safety
While the monsoon brings spectacular beauty, it also brings risks. Authorities have issued safety advisories for many tourist spots, and some areas may have entry restrictions. Recently, over 100 tourists were rescued from Zenith Waterfall in Raigad after a sudden surge in water levels. In several districts, including Pune and Satara, officials have imposed temporary bans on visiting waterfalls and forts to prevent accidents. Visitors are urged to check local conditions before travelling, avoid slippery rocks, and never underestimate the force of the water. Following official guidelines ensures a safe and enjoyable trip.
