The IBM Collaboration: A Hub for High-Performance Computing
One of the most significant developments at MAHE is the IBM-MIT AI Lab, also known as MAHE Intelligence GPU (MIG), launched at the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) Bengaluru campus. This lab is a powerhouse, housing a High-Performance Computing (HPC)
facility capable of supporting 30 advanced computing workloads at the same time. For students, this means unprecedented access to the kind of computational power needed for serious AI research in areas like machine learning, generative AI, computer vision, and natural language processing. The collaboration with IBM also integrates the IBM SkillsBuild program, offering workshops, bootcamps, and mentorship to equip students with industry-recognized credentials.
Microsoft's Strategic Partnership: AI Across Disciplines
MAHE has also forged a major partnership with Microsoft to establish AI labs across five of its constituent units. This initiative is unique because it extends beyond pure engineering. The labs are being set up at the T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), Manipal School of Commerce and Economics (MSCE), and even the Manipal Law School (MLS). This cross-disciplinary approach allows students in management, finance, and law to gain hands-on experience with AI tools relevant to their fields. The goal is to create a generation of professionals who not only understand AI but can apply it responsibly to solve real-world challenges in diverse sectors.
From Ideation to Application at NEXORA
At its Dubai campus, MAHE has launched NEXORA, a next-generation AI lab designed to take students through the entire innovation cycle. The lab is structured into dedicated zones for ideation, learning, development, and experience. This allows students to conceptualize an AI solution, build a prototype, test its application, and demonstrate its impact. Student projects already showcased include interactive virtual avatars, real-time facial recognition systems, and intelligent retail solutions. The lab is equipped with high-performance computing, edge AI platforms, and cloud-integrated environments, giving students a sandbox to turn ambitious ideas into functional products.
Research and Project-Based Learning
Beyond specific corporate-backed labs, MAHE fosters a broader culture of AI research. The Centre for Artificial and Machine Intelligence is a hub for faculty and student research projects. The university is actively recruiting for research positions for projects like developing AI-based systems for medical diagnostics, showcasing a commitment to impactful, real-world applications. Through initiatives like MAHE Agentic Intelligent Console (MAGIC), the university is itself becoming an AI-driven ecosystem, using intelligent agents to streamline everything from admissions to academic processes. This provides a living laboratory for students to see large-scale AI implementation firsthand.
What This Means for Students
For an aspiring tech student, this focus on AI provides a rich learning environment. The opportunities go beyond traditional classroom lectures. Students can participate in industry-sponsored projects, hackathons, and internships facilitated by these advanced labs. They can gain practical skills in deep learning, data analytics, and AI ethics, directly aligning their education with evolving industry requirements. Whether it's through the MSc in Data Science program or specialised PhD tracks, MAHE is positioning its students to not just enter the AI field, but to become its future leaders.
