Putting the Numbers in Perspective
The figure of 40 lakh enquiries per minute represents a monumental ten-fold increase from the previous capacity of around 4 lakh. An 'enquiry' isn't just a booking; it includes every time a user checks for seat availability, fares, PNR status, or route
details. This massive surge in capacity means the system can now serve millions more users simultaneously without buckling under pressure. Alongside this, the system's booking capacity has also been dramatically enhanced, jumping from about 32,000 tickets per minute to over 1.5 lakh tickets per minute. This five-fold increase in booking power is designed to tackle the infamous Tatkal rush and peak holiday demand, making the entire process smoother for a significant portion of the over 23 million daily passengers on the network.
The Technology Driving the Change
This massive leap forward is the result of replacing a nearly 40-year-old legacy system with a next-generation, cloud-based platform. The old Passenger Reservation System (PRS), while revolutionary for its time, was running on technology from 2010 and was not built for today's massive digital demand. The new system, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), is built to be more agile, scalable, and reliable. By moving to a cloud-enabled architecture, Indian Railways can handle the huge, simultaneous traffic spikes that previously caused website crashes and booking failures, especially during the frantic morning Tatkal window. This modernization is a critical national infrastructure project, considering that nearly 89% of all reserved tickets were booked online between June 2025 and June 2026.
What This Means for the Everyday Traveller
For the average passenger, this technical upgrade translates into a less stressful and more efficient booking experience. The most immediate benefit is a significant reduction in system crashes and 'payment failed' errors that plagued users during high-traffic periods. With the system now able to handle much larger volumes, users should experience faster search results and a smoother booking journey from start to finish. The redesigned IRCTC website and apps, which feature a simplified, multilingual interface, complement this backend upgrade. Features like a fare calendar and easier seat selection further enhance usability. Furthermore, the phased rollout, which began in August 2026, ensures that the transition happens smoothly without disrupting a service that operates around the clock.
A More Secure and Transparent System
Beyond speed and capacity, the reforms also focus on enhancing security and fairness. To curb the misuse of the Tatkal system by touts and automated bots, Indian Railways has introduced a more robust authentication process. Since July 2025, only authenticated users can book Tatkal tickets, with OTP-based verification via Aadhaar or other government IDs stored in DigiLocker becoming mandatory. This ensures that genuine passengers have a better chance of securing last-minute tickets. Additionally, the reservation chart preparation time has been advanced to eight hours before departure, giving waitlisted passengers more clarity and time to make alternative travel plans if their tickets are not confirmed.
