The Breakfast Dilemma
For many, mornings are a frantic race against the clock. This often means breakfast becomes an afterthought—a quick slice of toast, a sugary cereal, or worse, nothing at all. While convenient, these options often lack the necessary nutrients to power
your day, leading to a mid-morning energy crash and persistent hunger pangs. The key to a productive morning is a balanced meal, and protein is a non-negotiable part of that equation. Protein is crucial for stabilising blood sugar levels, supporting muscle health, and promoting a feeling of fullness that can prevent unhealthy snacking later.
Why Oats Are a Breakfast Superstar
Oats have earned their reputation as a health food for good reason. They are a powerhouse of nutrients, including essential minerals like manganese, phosphorus, and iron. Their primary benefit comes from a type of soluble fibre called beta-glucan, which is known to help lower cholesterol, improve gut health, and regulate blood sugar. This high fibre content also means oats provide sustained energy release, keeping you fuelled and focused without the sharp spikes and crashes associated with sugary breakfasts. Consumed as a whole grain, oats offer a well-balanced nutritional profile that makes them an ideal foundation for any morning meal.
The Protein Power of Oats Chilla
While oats themselves contain a decent amount of protein, the magic of the oats chilla lies in its combination with other protein-rich ingredients. The most common addition is besan (gram flour), which not only provides a significant protein boost but also improves the batter's texture, preventing the stickiness that can sometimes occur with oats alone. This combination turns a simple bowl of oats into a savoury, pancake-style meal that is far more satisfying. The addition of besan and vegetables makes the oats chilla a complete meal, providing complex carbohydrates, fibre, and the essential protein needed to keep you full and energised for hours.
Your Go-To Oats Chilla Recipe
Ready to transform your mornings? This recipe is simple, quick, and delicious. You'll need: 1 cup of rolled oats (ground into a coarse powder), ¼ cup of besan, ½ cup of finely chopped mixed vegetables (like onion, capsicum, and carrot), 1-2 finely chopped green chillies, ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder, salt to taste, and water to create the batter. First, combine the ground oats, besan, and spices in a bowl. Add the chopped vegetables and mix well. Gradually pour in water while whisking to form a smooth, lump-free batter with a pouring consistency similar to that of dosa batter. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and lightly grease it. Pour a ladleful of batter and spread it into a circle. Cook for a couple of minutes until the base is golden brown and firm, then flip and cook the other side. Serve hot.
Customise and Meal Prep
The beauty of the oats chilla is its versatility. You can add a wide variety of finely chopped or grated vegetables like spinach, cabbage, zucchini, or bottle gourd (lauki). To further increase the protein content, consider adding grated paneer or tofu to the batter or as a filling. Spices like cumin, ajwain (carom seeds), and chaat masala can be added for extra flavour. To make your mornings even more efficient, the batter can be prepared the night before and stored in the refrigerator for up to two days. Just be sure to give it a good stir before cooking, adding a splash of water if it has thickened.
