Kedarkantha - The Quintessential Winter Trek
Often hailed as the 'Queen of Winter Treks', Kedarkantha is arguably the most popular snow camping destination in India, and for good reason. Located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, the trek to its 12,500-foot summit is considered easy to moderate,
making it highly accessible for beginners. The journey begins from the quaint village of Sankri and winds through enchanting pine and oak forests. The campsites are a major highlight, particularly Juda-ka-Talab, a serene high-altitude lake that often freezes over in winter, and the Kedarkantha Base Camp, an open meadow offering phenomenal night skies. From the summit, campers are rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Himalayan giants like the Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak ranges. The trek provides an ideal mix of adventure and accessibility, with well-established trails and campsites that make for a cherished first snow camping experience.
Dayara Bugyal - The Endless Snow Meadow
If your idea of heaven is a vast, rolling expanse of untouched snow, Dayara Bugyal is your destination. 'Bugyal' means high-altitude meadow, and in winter, this 28-square-kilometre pasture transforms into one of India's most beautiful snowscapes. The trek is rated easy to moderate and typically starts from the villages of Barsu or Raithal. Camping here feels like stepping into another world, with the silence of the mountains broken only by the sound of the wind. The evening light casts a magical glow on the snow, creating a photographer's dream. The primary reward of Dayara Bugyal is the staggering view of the Gangotri and Bandarpoonch mountain ranges. Its wide, gentle slopes also make it an excellent spot for beginner skiers, offering a different kind of snow adventure.
Chopta - The Mini Switzerland of India
Known for its stunning beauty, Chopta serves as the gateway to the Tungnath Temple, the world's highest Shiva temple, and the Chandrashila summit. In winter, the entire region is draped in a thick blanket of snow, turning it into a peaceful wonderland. The trek from Chopta to Chandrashila is relatively short but incredibly rewarding, making it perfect for a long weekend trip. Camping is often done in the meadows of Baniyakund, which offer protection from the harshest winds while still providing stunning views. The main event is the sunrise from the Chandrashila peak, which offers an unhindered 360-degree view of major Himalayan peaks including Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Chaukhamba. The combination of spiritual significance and immense natural beauty makes snow camping in Chopta a deeply fulfilling experience.
Auli - Ski Slopes and Snowy Vistas
While famous as one of India's premier ski destinations, Auli also offers a fantastic snow camping experience with some of the most dramatic mountain views. Unlike the other spots which require multi-day treks, camping in Auli can be more accessible, with campsites located near the main town. This makes it a great option for families or those looking for a less strenuous adventure. The main draw here is the spectacular, up-close view of Nanda Devi, India's second-highest peak. Campers can spend their days learning to ski or simply enjoying the ambience of the resort town, and their evenings watching the alpenglow on the surrounding peaks. Short treks from Auli, like the one to Gorson Bugyal, provide even more opportunities to immerse yourself in the snowy landscape and capture stunning photographs of peaks like Dunagiri and Kamet.
