The Great Summer Snack Shift
For generations, summer snacking in India often meant one of two things: indulgent, deep-fried treats like pakoras and samosas, or intensely sweet kulfis and syrupy drinks. While these classics remain beloved, a noticeable shift is taking place. Driven
by a new wave of health consciousness, particularly among urban millennials and Gen Z, the demand for snacks that are both tasty and nourishing is soaring. The sweltering heat itself is a powerful motivator. Heavy, oily foods can leave you feeling sluggish and lethargic, the last thing anyone wants during a long, hot afternoon. This cultural pivot is not about deprivation; it's about adaptation. It's about finding smarter, lighter, and more balanced ways to satisfy those mid-day hunger pangs without the post-snack slump. This trend has been accelerated by greater access to information about nutrition and a booming market of startups catering to this very need.
Millet Makes a Comeback
Once considered a humble, rural staple, millets are now the superheroes of the modern Indian snack world. Grains like jowar (sorghum), bajra (pearl millet), and ragi (finger millet) are stepping into the spotlight. Thanks to their inherent health benefits—they are gluten-free, high in fibre, and packed with nutrients—they form the perfect base for a healthy snack. The market is now flooded with innovative millet-based options. Think baked, not fried, ragi chips seasoned with peri-peri, jowar puffs that provide a satisfying crunch without the guilt, and multi-grain crackers perfect for dipping. This resurgence is supported by both government initiatives promoting 'superfoods' and a consumer base eager for snacks that connect back to Indian agricultural roots while fitting a modern, health-aware lifestyle.
The Power of Protein and Puffs
The quest for a 'balanced' snack inevitably leads to protein. Protein keeps you fuller for longer, preventing the endless cycle of mindless munching. This is where traditional snacks like roasted chana (chickpeas) and makhana (fox nuts) are thriving. Makhana, in particular, has undergone a gourmet makeover. Once a simple, puffy seed eaten during fasts, it's now available in a dozen exciting flavours, from classic salt and pepper to pudina and cheese. They are lightweight, crunchy, and low in calories. Similarly, roasted chickpeas, a timeless healthy snack, are being packaged and seasoned in new ways, making them a convenient and savoury protein hit. These snacks provide the crunch and flavour we crave, but with a much better nutritional profile than their potato-chip counterparts.
Cool, Conscious, and Creative
When it's scorching outside, sometimes the best snack is a cool one. Here too, the trend is shifting from sugar-laden ice creams to more balanced alternatives. The humble dahi (yogurt) is being elevated into beautiful yogurt bowls, topped with fresh seasonal fruits like mangoes and pomegranates, a sprinkle of seeds, and a drizzle of honey. These are not only cooling and delicious but also provide a great mix of protein, probiotics, and vitamins. Homemade fruit popsicles, made by blending real fruit with a little water or coconut water, are another popular choice, offering hydration and sweetness without the refined sugar. Even the simple act of eating chilled fruit—a bowl of watermelon, musk melon, or lychees—is being appreciated as the ultimate refreshing and hydrating summer snack.
Reimagining the Classics
This movement isn't about completely abandoning our favourite street foods. Instead, it's about giving them a lighter, healthier twist at home. The air fryer has become a kitchen staple for many, allowing them to create crispy samosas, aloo tikkis, and even pakoras with a fraction of the oil. Chaat is being reconfigured with a base of sprouted moong dal instead of fried papdi, and topped with cooling yogurt and tangy tamarind chutney. These home-style reinventions allow people to enjoy the flavours they grew up with, but in a way that aligns with their current health and wellness goals. It’s the best of both worlds: traditional taste with a modern, balanced approach.
