Initially, Sujoy Ghosh was slated to direct, but Anand, who was already a producer and developing the action sequences, stepped into the director's chair as the project's scale expanded. Ghosh remains a writer on the project. This change signals a clear focus on creating a massive, globally-scaled action spectacle, playing to Anand’s proven strengths.
Raw, Rustic, and Ruthless Action
Reports suggest that 'King' will showcase a different side of SRK's action persona compared to the polished stylings of 'Pathaan' and 'Jawan'. The approach is described as more "raw and rustic," with Khan portraying a gritty character with shades of grey. This darker, more ruthless role is a nod to his iconic anti-hero characters from earlier in his career. The film is reportedly inspired by the 1994 French classic 'Léon: The Professional', which centres on an assassin who takes a young girl under his protection. This premise suggests a narrative driven by a mentor-protégé relationship, blending intense action with deep emotional currents. The action itself is expected to be a hybrid of practical, real-world stunts and VFX enhancements, with a strong emphasis on chase sequences.
An Unprecedented Scale and Budget
The producers are sparing no expense to make 'King' a landmark action film. The budget is reportedly in the range of ₹350-450 crore, making it one of the most expensive Indian action films ever produced. A significant portion of this budget is dedicated to executing groundbreaking action set pieces. One 10-day action schedule filmed in Europe, involving Shah Rukh Khan and Abhishek Bachchan, reportedly cost a staggering ₹50 crore alone. The film is said to feature six major action sequences designed to be extraordinary global-level spectacles. Production has taken place across international locations including Poland and Cape Town, as well as in Mumbai, underscoring the film's vast canvas.
International Expertise Meets SRK's Vision
To achieve a global standard, Siddharth Anand is collaborating with international stunt directors to design and execute the film's action. However, Shah Rukh Khan himself is taking a deeply hands-on role. As a producer and the lead actor, he is reportedly heavily involved in the creative process, personally overseeing the development of action blocks. Sources have indicated that Khan has even been involved in choreographing some of the complex stunts himself, particularly those filmed in Europe with Abhishek Bachchan. This deep personal investment is fueled by his desire to create a perfect launchpad for his daughter, Suhana, who also reportedly performs several of her own stunts in the film.
Training and Grueling Shoots
The commitment to realistic action has demanded intense preparation from the cast. Shah Rukh Khan has been training with Suhana for some of the new-age action sequences. The shoot itself has been grueling, with reports detailing an eight-night shoot for a high-octane sequence set against a Vijayadashami celebration, involving hundreds of performers. The production also faced setbacks, as Khan revealed he suffered a few injuries during filming that required them to pause and restart several times. Despite these challenges, the star has confirmed he has recovered and filming is nearly complete, with the release date firmly set for December 24, 2026.
