From Awe to Action
The spectacle of a rocket soaring into the sky is a powerful motivator. For decades, Indians have watched ISRO’s achievements with pride. Missions like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan have become moments of national unity, sparking immense curiosity about
space. But ISRO's goal is to convert this passive admiration into active participation. The organisation has created a structured pathway to guide young enthusiasts from wonder to hands-on involvement, ensuring that today’s fascinated school children become tomorrow's space scientists and engineers. This strategic approach aims to build a sustainable talent pipeline that will fuel India’s ambitions in the global space economy.
Catching Them Young with YUVIKA
At the forefront of ISRO’s outreach is the “YUva VIgyani KAryakram” (YUVIKA), or Young Scientist Programme. Launched in 2019, this annual two-week residential program is designed to “catch them young” by immersing school students in the world of space science. Selected students, with a preference for those from rural areas, spend their summer holidays at various ISRO centres across the country. They attend lectures by eminent scientists, participate in hands-on activities like model rocketry and assembling DIY kits for Chandrayaan-3, and get exclusive tours of labs and facilities. The YUVIKA 2026 edition saw over 100,000 applicants for a few hundred spots, demonstrating the massive demand for such engagement.
Building Satellites in College
For older students, the engagement becomes even more advanced. ISRO’s Student Satellite Programme provides a platform for university and college teams to design, build, and test their own satellites under the mentorship of ISRO scientists. These are not just theoretical exercises; ISRO provides technical guidance, critical materials, and even a free launch opportunity aboard its reliable Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). This initiative demystifies space technology and equips students with invaluable real-world skills in engineering, project management, and teamwork. Since the program began, numerous student-built satellites have been successfully launched, involving institutions from across the country.
A Digital Gateway to the Cosmos
Recognising the need for wider accessibility, ISRO has also embraced digital outreach. The ISRO STEM and Jigyasa portals serve as online hubs for space education, offering certified courses, interactive sessions with scientists, a virtual museum, and various knowledge resources. These platforms allow students from any part of the country to learn about space science and technology at their own pace. Furthermore, initiatives like the 'Space on Wheels' bus bring mobile exhibitions to towns and cities, making space education accessible to thousands of students and the general public who may not be able to visit an ISRO centre.
Fostering a National Space Ecosystem
ISRO's efforts are about more than just recruitment for its own missions. By fostering an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), these programs are building a skilled workforce for India's rapidly growing private space sector. The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) further encourages this by organising competitions and providing mentorship to nurture the next generation of space entrepreneurs. By inspiring students, providing structured learning pathways, and supporting innovation, ISRO is ensuring that India’s future in space is not just about government missions, but about a vibrant, nationwide ecosystem of exploration and enterprise.
