The New Rules of the Game
For years, swiping your credit card for complimentary lounge access was a given for many travellers in India. That has changed significantly. In response to overcrowding and rising costs, banks and card networks like Visa and Mastercard have introduced
new eligibility criteria. The biggest shift is the introduction of a minimum spend requirement. Now, to unlock lounge access for a given quarter, cardholders often need to have spent a specified amount—commonly ranging from ₹5,000 to as high as ₹75,000—in the preceding quarter. If you don't meet this threshold, your card will likely be declined at the lounge entrance, even if it previously offered free entry. This change affects a wide range of cards, from entry-level to mid-tier, and has made access a conditional privilege rather than a guaranteed perk.
Why Your Card Might Get Declined
There are a few key reasons why you might suddenly find your access denied. The most common is failing to meet the new quarterly spending milestone set by your bank. Many card issuers, including major players like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank, have implemented these spending-based rules. Another reason could be that you've exhausted your quarterly or annual limit for complimentary visits. Most entry-level cards offer a fixed number, such as one or two visits per quarter. Furthermore, some banks have entirely removed the lounge benefit from certain cards. For instance, the Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card discontinued its complimentary domestic lounge access benefit from April 2026. Similarly, RuPay Platinum debit cards also lost this feature, though some RuPay Select cards retained it with a spending condition. It’s now crucial to check your bank's latest policy before heading to the airport.
Entry-Level Cards That Still Offer a Way In
Despite the tighter rules, several entry-level and lifetime-free cards still provide a pathway to the lounge. The key is to pick a card with a manageable spending requirement. The Scapia Federal Bank Credit Card, which is lifetime-free, offers unlimited domestic lounge access, but you need to spend ₹5,000 in a billing cycle to unlock it. The IDFC FIRST Select Credit Card, another lifetime-free option, provides one domestic airport lounge visit per quarter, contingent on spending ₹20,000 in the previous month. For those with lower spending, the PNB RuPay Platinum Credit Card is a strong contender. It has a nominal annual fee of ₹500, which is waived with just one transaction per quarter, and it offers two domestic lounge visits per quarter without a hefty spending requirement. These cards prove that with a little planning, lounge access remains an attainable luxury.
How to Strategically Meet Spend Requirements
Meeting a quarterly spend target of ₹5,000 or more might seem daunting, but it can be achieved by channeling your regular expenses through your chosen credit card. Instead of using cash or a debit card, use your credit card for everyday purchases like groceries, fuel, utility bills, and online shopping. Many cards now integrate with UPI, making it even easier to clock transactions. Plan your larger purchases, such as electronics or travel bookings, within a specific quarter to ensure you meet the threshold. The goal isn't to spend more money but to consolidate the spending you already do onto one card. Always track your spending against the required milestone through your banking app to confirm you will be eligible for lounge access in the following quarter. A little bit of planning can ensure you continue enjoying this valuable travel perk without any surprises.
