The Science of Soil and Air
Understanding why humidity matters starts with two key processes: evaporation and transpiration. Evaporation is the process of water turning into vapour from the soil's surface. Transpiration is how plants 'breathe', releasing water vapour through tiny
pores in their leaves, called stomata. When the air is dry (low humidity), it acts like a sponge, pulling moisture from everything, including your plant's leaves and its soil. This speeds up both transpiration and evaporation, causing the soil to dry out quickly. Conversely, when the air is already saturated with moisture (high humidity), there's less room for more water vapour. This slows down the rate at which water leaves both the plant and the soil, meaning the potting mix stays wet for much longer. This is especially true during India's monsoon season, when indoor humidity can be very high.
The Dangers of Soil That Stays Too Wet
While you don’t want your plants to be thirsty, soil that remains soggy is far more dangerous than soil that gets a little too dry. The primary risk is root rot. Plant roots need oxygen to function, but when soil is waterlogged, the air pockets disappear, effectively suffocating the roots. This leads to decay, preventing the plant from absorbing nutrients and water, ironically causing it to wilt even though it's sitting in wet soil. Constantly damp soil is also a breeding ground for fungal diseases and common household pests like fungus gnats, which lay their eggs in moist topsoil. Symptoms of overwatering often include yellowing leaves, a soft or rotten stem base, and a musty smell from the soil.
Ditch the Rigid Watering Schedule
The single biggest mistake plant owners make is watering on a strict calendar schedule, such as every Saturday. As humidity levels change with the seasons—from dry winter air caused by heaters to the dampness of the monsoon—your plant's water needs will change too. Following a rigid schedule is the fastest way to either underwater or, more commonly, overwater your plants. Instead of relying on the calendar, the golden rule is to check the soil moisture before you even pick up the watering can. This habit is more important than any other aspect of watering and will save your plants from the stress of inconsistent moisture levels.
How to Properly Check for Dryness
There are several simple, reliable ways to tell if your plant actually needs water. The most common is the finger test: insert your index finger about one to two inches into the soil. If the soil feels dry at your fingertip, it's time to water. If you feel any moisture, it’s best to wait another day or two and check again. For a less messy option, use a wooden chopstick or dowel. Insert it deep into the pot, leave it for a minute, and then pull it out. If it comes out clean and dry, the soil is dry. If damp soil clings to it, there's still plenty of moisture in the pot. Another method is to become familiar with the weight of your plant. A pot with dry soil will feel significantly lighter than one with wet soil. After watering, lift the pot to feel its 'heavy' weight, and then lift it every few days to gauge how it lightens as it dries.
Adjusting for Your Home's Climate
Your watering frequency needs to adapt to your environment. During the hot, dry summer months, plants will need more frequent watering as the soil dries out fast. However, during the monsoon, even indoor plants will require much less water due to the high ambient humidity. In this period, ensuring your pots have excellent drainage is critical to prevent waterlogging. In winter, if you use heaters, the air can become extremely dry, and you might find your plants need more water than you'd expect. Conversely, a cool, unheated room in winter will slow plant growth and water usage, meaning you should water far less often. The key is to always observe your specific conditions and let the soil, not the season, be your final guide.
