Understanding the Monsoon 'Break'
The monsoon doesn't rain continuously for four months. It has active and weak phases. We are currently in what meteorologists call a 'break' monsoon. This phase is characterized by a significant reduction in rainfall over most of the country, particularly
the core monsoon zone. The monsoon trough, a key driver of rainfall, shifts closer to the Himalayan foothills, leading to dry spells in the plains and peninsular India but sometimes increasing rain in the northeastern states and along the Himalayas. This current break has led to a return of clearer skies and hotter, drier conditions in many regions that were recently experiencing widespread rain.
A National Rainfall Report Card
This year's monsoon has been notably erratic. Despite floods in some areas, the country as a whole is facing a significant rainfall deficit. As of early September, the nationwide deficit stands at around 14%. The picture is more concerning when broken down by region. South Peninsular India is facing a 27% deficit, while East and Northeast India are short by 24%. States like Meghalaya (58% deficit), Andhra Pradesh (45%), and Bihar (35%) are seeing major shortfalls. This follows an August that was the warmest since 1901 and saw a 16% rain deficit, largely attributed to strengthening El Niño conditions. The uneven distribution—intense downpours in some areas and prolonged dry spells in others—has stressed agricultural activities.
A System Brewing in the Bay
Meteorologists are closely watching the Bay of Bengal, where a fresh low-pressure area is expected to form around September 11. This system is developing over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha. Such systems are the primary rain-bearers for the Indian subcontinent during the monsoon. Their formation and movement are critical, especially in the latter half of the season when the monsoon naturally begins to weaken. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that this system will likely increase rainfall activity starting around September 9, with heavy rainfall possible around September 10 to 12.
Why This System is Crucial
The timing and strength of this new system are incredibly important. For many farmers, crops like cotton, soybean, and pulses are at a critical growth stage where they require adequate moisture. A revival of the monsoon, driven by this low-pressure area, could provide the necessary rain to save these crops and improve yields. It could help alleviate the rainfall deficits in central and southern India, depending on its track. Furthermore, September rainfall is vital for replenishing reservoirs and ensuring sufficient soil moisture for the upcoming winter crop (Rabi) sowing season. A strong spell of rain could make a significant difference to both agricultural output and water security for the coming months.
Potential Risks and the Path Ahead
While the hope is for a beneficial revival, these systems also carry risks. If the low-pressure area intensifies significantly, it could lead to very heavy rainfall and potential flooding in the regions along its path, particularly in coastal Odisha and West Bengal. Weather models suggest the monsoon could become more active over parts of central India, including Maharashtra, from September 14 onwards. However, forecasts from the IMD for September overall still predict below-normal rainfall for the country as a whole, suggesting this system may provide regional relief rather than a complete reversal of the seasonal trend. The next week will be critical in determining the final performance of the 2026 monsoon.
