Paving the Way with Gold
Dubai is preparing to unveil what it calls the world's first and longest walkway constructed from 24-carat gold. The project was announced by officials from the Dubai Gold District, who confirmed the path is expected to open to the public before the end
of 2026. Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior director at the Dubai Gold District, stated that the walkway is scheduled to open within the next two months, offering a unique experience for both residents and tourists. This glittering pathway is part of a broader strategy to cement Dubai's status as a top-tier tourist destination and the global epicentre for gold trading. While the city's streets have long been metaphorically described as paved with gold, this project turns that saying into a literal, walkable reality.
The Heart of the Gold District
This golden walkway won't be in just any location. It will be the landmark feature of the newly launched Dubai Gold District in Deira, an area historically significant for its traditional Gold Souk. The district, launched by developer Ithra Dubai, is a purpose-built hub designed to bring the entire gold and jewellery ecosystem—from wholesale and bullion trading to retail and investment—into a single, consolidated location. The district already hosts over 1,000 retailers selling gold, jewellery, and other luxury goods. The addition of the golden path is designed to be a major tourist draw, elevating the district's profile and visitor experience.
More Than Just a Pretty Path
The announcement of the walkway was strategically made during an event celebrating two other gold-related achievements: Guinness World Records for the world's heaviest and largest pair of gold earrings. This highlights a coordinated effort to keep Dubai at the forefront of the gold industry. The walkway project is coupled with plans for a massive gold and jewellery exhibition, which aims to be the largest trade event of its kind in the Middle East. The district itself is experiencing significant growth, with a reported 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new retail stores since the start of 2026. This expansion indicates strong commercial demand, which the new attractions are meant to support.
A City of Unending Ambition
The golden path is the latest in a long line of ambitious, boundary-pushing projects that define Dubai's identity. The city is already home to the world's tallest building (Burj Khalifa), the deepest diving pool, and one of the largest manmade islands. This relentless pursuit of 'world's firsts' is a core part of its economic and tourism strategy. Other massive projects currently underway or in advanced planning include the expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport to become the world's largest, the Palm Jebel Ali, which is twice the size of the original Palm Jumeirah, and the Dubai Metro Blue Line, a major transport infrastructure investment. These developments show a city that is not just building attractions, but is creating a comprehensive, futuristic urban environment.
What We Still Don't Know
While the announcement has generated significant buzz, many specific details about the golden path remain under wraps. Key information, such as its exact length, the construction method, the quantity of gold being used, and the total cost, have not yet been released by the developer, Ithra Dubai, or the Dubai Media Office. Officials have stated that further details will be revealed in phases as the project nears its grand opening. For now, the world waits to see just how a 24nd carat gold path will be engineered and what it will feel like to walk on a street that is quite literally golden.
