The Five Upgraded Routes
This new initiative enhances the travel experience on several crucial long-distance and intercity routes connecting the northeastern states with other parts of the country. The Kamakhya–SMVT Bengaluru Express was one of the first to launch with these
new services on October 14. The other four trains included in this initial phase are the Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express, the Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express, the New Jalpaiguri–Patna Vande Bharat Express, and the New Jalpaiguri–Guwahati Vande Bharat Express. With this move, the Northeast Frontier Railway becomes the second zonal railway in the country to implement such a comprehensive, technology-enabled service upgrade, signalling a strong commitment to modernising passenger amenities.
What 'Enhanced Services' Actually Means
The upgrades are focused on tangible improvements that passengers will notice from the moment they step on board. The core of the initiative is the On-Board Housekeeping Service (OBHS), which ensures a higher standard of cleanliness and maintenance throughout the journey. This includes regular, scheduled cleaning of coach interiors, aisles, doorways, and AC windows. Special attention is being given to washroom upkeep, with dedicated teams tasked with maintaining hygiene. Efficient waste management systems are also being put in place to keep the coaches tidy during long trips. For passengers in sleeper classes, the timely distribution and collection of fresh, clean linen is another key component of the enhanced service.
Technology-Driven Accountability and Support
What sets this initiative apart is its reliance on technology to ensure services are delivered effectively. A centralised digital monitoring system has been implemented to track housekeeping staff and verify that cleaning tasks are completed as scheduled, using methods like geo-tagged service validation. This move towards greater accountability is designed to ensure consistent quality. Furthermore, passengers now have access to dedicated teams who can provide basic technical assistance for minor issues within the coach. The railway has set an ambitious target of addressing all passenger complaints within a two-hour window. Any issues that cannot be resolved promptly by the onboard team will be automatically escalated to higher railway authorities for immediate attention.
A Modern Approach to Passenger Feedback
To continuously refine the service quality, the NFR is incorporating a modern feedback loop. Passengers will be able to provide real-time feedback and star ratings on the services they receive. This data, combined with AI-based cleaning assessments, will be used to evaluate the performance of the housekeeping teams and identify areas for improvement. This data-driven approach marks a shift from traditional feedback methods and aims to create a more responsive and passenger-centric system. By actively seeking and analysing passenger input, the railway hopes to foster a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring that the enhanced services meet and exceed traveller expectations on these vital routes.
