The Heart of the Monsoon Magic
Nestled in the Sahyadri hills, Saputara transforms into a lush, green paradise during the rainy season. To celebrate this seasonal splendour, Gujarat Tourism organises the month-long Saputara Monsoon Festival, typically held from late July to mid-August.
This year, the festival promises a vibrant atmosphere filled with the sounds of folk music, the sight of traditional dances, and the taste of local delicacies, making it an irresistible draw for tourists from across the country. The entire town, especially the area around the picturesque Saputara Lake, becomes a hub of activity, celebrating the region's rich tribal heritage and the refreshing spirit of the monsoon.
A Feast for the Senses and Spirit
The festival's schedule is packed with activities for every type of traveller. Cultural programmes are a major highlight, featuring captivating performances of the Dangi tribal dance, along with folk artists from across India showcasing traditions like Lavani, Bhangra, and Chhau. For thrill-seekers, there are numerous adventure sports, including paragliding, ziplining, boating, and water zorbing. The festival also includes a variety of workshops, such as Warli painting and bamboo craft, allowing visitors to engage directly with local art forms. Special events are often planned for weekends, from tribal food festivals and live music to a Rain Run Marathon, ensuring there's always something new to experience.
Beyond the Festival Grounds
While the festival is the main attraction, the natural beauty of Saputara itself is a compelling reason to visit. A weekend trip offers ample time to explore the area's scenic viewpoints. Don't miss the chance to catch a breathtaking view from Sunrise and Sunset Points. A ride on the ropeway to Table Point offers panoramic vistas of the green valleys below. For a dose of nature, the Gira Waterfalls, especially magnificent during the monsoon, are a short drive away. You can also enjoy a peaceful boat ride on Saputara Lake or delve into the local culture at the Saputara Tribal Museum and the Artist Village, which showcases tribal arts and crafts.
