The Old Problem with Automatic Payments
For years, automatic payments were a double-edged sword. While convenient for paying bills on time, they often came with frustrating drawbacks. Many users signed up for services using recurring payment instructions on credit cards or older digital payment systems
that were difficult to track and even harder to cancel. Finding a consolidated list of all your active mandates was nearly impossible. You might have had to sift through bank statements or log into multiple merchant websites to hunt down these so-called “zombie subscriptions” that continued to debit your account long after you stopped using a service. Cancelling often involved navigating confusing menus or contacting customer support, a process deliberately made difficult by some companies. This lack of transparency and control led to unexpected charges and made budgeting a constant challenge. Many users reported being unaware they had even authorised a recurring mandate, especially when signing up for free trials that quietly converted to paid plans.
Enter the New Era of UPI AutoPay
The introduction and evolution of UPI AutoPay by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has fundamentally changed the game. Governed by directives from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the modern e-mandate framework is built for consumer protection. The system replaces the fragmented and opaque nature of older recurring payment methods with a unified, transparent, and user-controlled solution. The key principle is simple: you should always be in charge of your money. This is achieved through a set of powerful features that address the pain points of the past. From pre-debit notifications to easy cancellation, the new rules are designed to put you firmly in the driver's seat of your finances.
Your New Financial Control Panel
The updated UPI AutoPay framework gives you a powerful set of tools to manage your expenses. First and foremost is the mandatory pre-debit notification. For every recurring payment, you must receive an alert at least 24 hours before the money is debited, giving you time to ensure you have sufficient funds or to cancel the payment if you no longer need the service. Second, transaction limits have been rationalised. Recurring transactions up to ₹15,000 can be processed automatically after a one-time setup. For higher-value payments like insurance premiums or mutual fund SIPs, this limit is extended to ₹1,00,000, reducing the need for repeated manual authentication. Most importantly, the power to modify, pause, or cancel a mandate is entirely in your hands. You can do this directly from your UPI app at any time, without needing to contact the merchant. This eliminates the frustrating experience of trying to unsubscribe from a service and gives you ultimate control.
How to View and Manage All Your Mandates
Forgetting which app you used to approve a subscription is a common issue. Thankfully, managing your mandates is now centralised. You can find a complete list of your active UPI AutoPay authorisations within the UPI apps you use. Here's a general guide: 1. Open your preferred UPI app (like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm). 2. Navigate to your profile section and look for an option named “AutoPay,” “Mandates,” or “Automatic Payments.” 3. Inside, you'll see tabs for pending, live, and completed mandates. The “Live” or “Active” tab shows all your current recurring payment instructions. 4. From here, you can select any mandate to view its details, such as the amount, frequency, and validity period. You will also see options to “Pause” or “Cancel/Revoke” the mandate. For a truly universal view, the NPCI has also developed a central portal (upihelp.npci.org.in) where you can see all mandates linked to your mobile number across all apps and banks, providing a single dashboard to manage everything.
A Safer, More Trustworthy Digital India
These changes are more than just a convenience; they are a critical step in building a more trustworthy digital payments ecosystem. By making recurring payments transparent and user-driven, the RBI and NPCI are empowering consumers and reducing the risk of unintentional spending or fraud. When users feel secure and in control, they are more likely to adopt digital payment methods for a wider range of services, from entertainment subscriptions to utility bills and investments. This fosters a healthier digital economy where both consumers and businesses benefit from a seamless, reliable, and secure payment infrastructure. The clear rules and easy controls ensure that the convenience of automation no longer comes at the cost of your financial well-being.
