Before diving into the science of 'too much', let's clarify what experts mean by 'volume'. In the context of building muscle (hypertrophy), training volume is most practically measured by the number of hard sets you perform for a specific muscle group
each week. A 'hard set' is one where you push yourself close to failure, typically leaving only one to three repetitions in the tank. It’s not just about lifting weights; it’s about the total number of challenging efforts you put a muscle through. This metric has been identified by exercise scientists as the most significant, controllable factor driving muscle growth.
The Science of Diminishing Returns
The core finding from a growing body of research is that the relationship between training volume and muscle growth isn't linear. It follows a classic dose-response curve with diminishing returns. The first few sets you do for a muscle provide a powerful growth signal. As you add more sets, the gains continue, but each additional set provides progressively less benefit.
