Beyond Thirst Quenching
Staying hydrated, especially in India’s varied and often hot climate, is a daily necessity. While water is the undisputed champion, our bodies sometimes need more than just fluid replacement. They need functional hydration—drinks that not only quench
thirst but also replenish electrolytes, aid bodily functions, and provide essential nutrients. This is where traditional Indian wisdom shines. For generations, households have relied on natural, homemade concoctions that cool the body, soothe the digestive system, and provide a host of health benefits. Two such powerhouses are Kokum Sharbat and Mint Cumin (Pudina Jeera) water. These drinks are not merely flavourful alternatives to water; they are time-tested wellness solutions that offer hydration with a purpose.
The Coastal Cooler: Kokum Sharbat
Hailing from the Western Ghats, particularly the Konkan coast, Kokum (Garcinia indica) is a small, purple-red fruit renowned for its cooling properties. Kokum Sharbat, a drink made from its dried rind, is a summer staple in states like Goa and Maharashtra for good reason. Its primary benefit is its ability to act as a natural coolant, helping to lower body temperature and prevent heat-related issues. But its virtues extend far beyond that. Kokum is an excellent digestive aid, known in Ayurveda to stimulate digestive fire (Agni) while pacifying Pitta dosha, making it effective against acidity, bloating, and indigestion. The fruit is also a rich source of antioxidants, including garcinol, which helps combat oxidative stress in the body. Furthermore, the presence of hydroxycitric acid (HCA) in Kokum is believed to aid in weight management by suppressing appetite. By replenishing fluids and electrolytes lost through sweat, Kokum Sharbat serves as a superior hydrator that supports overall health.
The Digestive Dynamo: Mint Cumin Water
Separately, mint (pudina) and cumin (jeera) are legends in the Indian spice cabinet. Together, they create a formidable wellness drink. Mint Cumin water, or Pudina Jeera Paani, is a simple yet profoundly effective hydrator and digestive aid. Mint is prized for its cooling sensation and its ability to soothe the stomach. Cumin, on the other hand, is is a digestive powerhouse, known to stimulate the secretion of enzymes that help break down food efficiently. When combined, they create a synergistic effect. The drink not only provides hydration but also actively works to improve gut health, reduce gas, and alleviate bloating. Jeera water is celebrated for its detoxification properties, helping to flush toxins from the body. Adding mint enhances this benefit while providing a refreshing flavour that makes hydration more appealing. This combination is particularly beneficial after heavy meals or as a daily tonic to keep the digestive system running smoothly.
When and How to Enjoy Them
While both drinks are excellent for daily hydration, they can be chosen based on specific needs. Kokum Sharbat is an ideal choice during peak summer months or after intense physical activity, when the body needs cooling and electrolyte replenishment. Its tangy-sweet flavour makes it a delightful alternative to sugary commercial drinks. Mint Cumin water can be consumed daily, especially in the morning on an empty stomach, to kickstart metabolism and digestion for the day. It can also be sipped throughout the day to maintain hydration and support gut health. Preparing them is remarkably simple. Kokum Sharbat is typically made by soaking dried Kokum rinds, then sweetening the infused water with jaggery or sugar and adding a pinch of black salt or roasted cumin powder. For Mint Cumin water, simply boil cumin seeds in water, let it cool, and add fresh mint leaves and a squeeze of lemon.
