The landscape for space enterprise in India has fundamentally changed. The Indian Space Policy of 2023, along with the creation of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), has effectively rolled out the welcome mat for the private

The result has been a boom in entrepreneurship, with the number of space startups growing from a handful to over 400. This new framework is critical for India to scale its space economy, which is projected to grow from around $8.4 billion to over $44 billion by 2033.
The Race to Make Launch Affordable
One of the most significant contributions from Indian startups is in the launch vehicle segment, historically the domain of national space agencies. Companies like Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos are at the forefront of developing smaller, cost-effective rockets designed for the burgeoning small satellite market. In July 2026, Skyroot Aerospace became the first private Indian company to launch a rocket, the Vikram-1, into orbit, a landmark moment for the sector. Agnikul Cosmos is also making strides with its innovative approach, including developing the world's first single-piece, 3D-printed rocket engine, which dramatically cuts down manufacturing time and cost. By focusing on small satellite launches, these companies are addressing a key market gap, offering dedicated rides to orbit that are more flexible than the traditional rideshare model on larger rockets. This not only creates a new revenue stream for India but also democratizes access to space for companies worldwide.
Data from the Cosmos
Beyond just getting to space, Indian startups are creating powerful tools to observe our planet from above. Pixxel is a standout in this area, building a constellation of hyperspectral imaging satellites. Unlike standard satellites, hyperspectral technology captures data across hundreds of spectral bands, providing incredibly detailed insights into everything from soil health and crop disease to pollution levels and mineral deposits. The company launched its first commercial Firefly satellites and has raised significant funding to expand its constellation, aiming for daily global coverage. The data and AI-powered analytics offered by companies like Pixxel and SatSure have transformative potential for industries like agriculture, mining, and climate monitoring, turning satellite images into actionable business intelligence.
Building the Space Supply Chain
A robust space economy requires more than just rockets and satellites; it needs a deep supply chain of components and services. Startups like Dhruva Space are filling this critical role by providing full-stack space engineering solutions. The Hyderabad-based company designs and manufactures satellite platforms, solar arrays, and satellite deployers—the hardware essential for any space mission. By developing these capabilities indigenously, Dhruva Space is reducing reliance on foreign suppliers and strengthening India's domestic manufacturing ecosystem. The company offers an integrated platform, managing the entire lifecycle of a satellite mission from design and launch integration to ground station services. This end-to-end service model lowers the barrier to entry for other organizations looking to leverage space technology.
The Economic Lift-Off
The collective efforts of these startups are catalysing significant economic growth. The Indian government projects the national space economy could grow fivefold to around $45 billion by the early 2030s, with a goal of capturing 8% of the global market. This expansion is attracting substantial investment, with private capital flows into the sector expected to reach billions of dollars in the coming years. More than just a niche industry, the growth of these space companies is creating high-value jobs, fostering advanced manufacturing capabilities, and positioning India as a globally competitive hub for space technology. The shift from a state-run program to a dynamic, private-led ecosystem signals India's arrival as a major player in the commercial space race.
