Malaysia: The Tropical Gateway
Malaysia has long been a favourite for Indian tourists, and its visa-free policy, extended through 2026, makes it incredibly accessible. Indian passport holders can enter for up to 30 days without a visa, eliminating the entire pre-travel application
process. The check-in experience is streamlined, but not entirely document-free. The key to a seamless arrival is completing the mandatory Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within three days before you land. Upon arrival, immigration officials will expect to see your valid passport (with at least six months' validity), confirmed return flight tickets, and proof of accommodation. Having these documents ready ensures a swift and smooth entry, letting you get to the bustling markets of Kuala Lumpur or the serene beaches of Langkawi without delay. The policy has made last-minute trips and family holidays significantly easier to plan.
Thailand: Land of Smiles, Simplified
Thailand remains one of the most popular getaways for Indians, thanks to its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and delicious food. After some recent uncertainty, the Thai government confirmed that visa-free entry for Indians will continue, though the maximum stay has been adjusted to 30 days. This duration is ample for most holidaymakers planning to explore Bangkok, Phuket, or Chiang Mai. For travellers, this means no visa application fees and no waiting for approvals. The 'seamless' aspect comes from simply being able to book a flight and go. However, like Malaysia, it pays to be prepared. Upon arrival, you will need a passport valid for at least six months, proof of a return flight, and evidence of accommodation. Officials may also ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay. While the stay period was reduced from a previous 60-day limit, the continuation of the visa-free scheme keeps Thailand firmly on the list of hassle-free destinations.
Sri Lanka: The Island Jewel Next Door
Our island neighbour, Sri Lanka, has made it exceptionally easy for Indian citizens to visit. The country launched a free Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme for India and several other nations. This means that while you still need to get an ETA online before you travel, the process is free of charge and approvals are typically quick. This policy grants a 30-day stay with a double-entry facility, perfect for those who might want to hop over to another nearby country and return. The check-in process at the airport is smooth for those who have their ETA approval, passport, return ticket, and proof of hotel bookings ready. The waiver of visa fees is part of Sri Lanka's push to boost tourism, making it more affordable and convenient to explore its ancient temples, lush tea plantations, and beautiful coastline.
