A New Commercial Approach
For the first time, NASA isn't building its own moon suits. Instead, the agency has turned to commercial partners, awarding contracts to Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace to design, build, and maintain the new suits. This approach mirrors NASA's strategy
with launch services, aiming to reduce costs for taxpayers and spur innovation by tapping into private sector expertise. Axiom Space, in a notable collaboration with Italian fashion house Prada for materials and design concepts, is developing the AxEMU (Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit) that will be worn on the Artemis III mission, the first crewed lunar landing in over 50 years. This partnership model allows NASA to purchase spacesuit services, focusing its own resources on the broader goals of deep space exploration.
Engineered for Unprecedented Mobility
The key upgrade in the Artemis suits is a dramatic improvement in mobility. Unlike the Apollo suits, which severely restricted movement, the new designs incorporate advanced bearings and joints at the hips, waist, and shoulders. This allows astronauts to walk more naturally, bend, kneel to pick up rock samples, and even reach over their heads—actions that were difficult or impossible for their predecessors. The goal is to move beyond the iconic but inefficient "bunny hop" of the Apollo missions. These enhancements will allow for more complex scientific tasks and safer navigation of the treacherous lunar surface, especially in the rocky and shadowed regions of the Moon's South Pole.
More Than Just Flexibility
While mobility is the headline feature, the new suits are a technological leap forward in every respect. Built with a modular design, they can be adapted for different missions and environments, from spacewalks in orbit to surface operations on the Moon and, eventually, Mars. They offer better protection against the extreme temperatures and abrasive, sharp lunar dust. The suits are also designed to fit a much wider range of astronaut body types, a significant improvement over the custom-tailored Apollo suits. An integrated HD camera in the helmet, advanced life support systems, and specialized tools will further enhance the scientific return of each moonwalk, which can last for up to eight hours.
Why Mobility Is Mission-Critical
The Artemis program's goals are fundamentally different from Apollo's. The objective is not just to plant a flag, but to establish a sustained human presence and conduct in-depth science. Astronauts will explore the lunar South Pole, a region thought to contain water ice in permanently shadowed craters. This requires the ability to traverse uneven terrain, climb slopes, and perform delicate scientific work. The enhanced mobility provided by the new suits is not a luxury; it's a core requirement for fulfilling the mission's ambitious scientific objectives. Without the ability to move freely and naturally, astronauts would be severely limited in their ability to explore and gather data, making these advanced suits a critical enabler for the next era of lunar discovery.
The Path to the Lunar Surface
Before they reach the Moon, the new spacesuits are undergoing extensive testing. Both Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace are putting their designs through rigorous evaluations in simulated environments, including underwater tests at NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Lab and on zero-gravity flights to mimic weightlessness. These tests are crucial for validating the suit's performance, safety, and ergonomics. Astronauts are participating in these simulations, providing direct feedback to engineers on everything from joint stiffness to the usability of tools. After passing a series of critical design reviews, the first flight-ready suits from Axiom Space are slated for delivery to be used on the historic Artemis III mission.
