Dayara Bugyal: The Endless Meadow
Often hailed as one of India's most beautiful high-altitude meadows, Dayara Bugyal in the Uttarkashi district transforms into a vast expanse of white in winter. At an altitude of over 11,000 feet, the rolling slopes become a pristine playground for snow
lovers, offering staggering views of the Gangotri and Bandarpoonch ranges. Camping here means waking up to frost on your tent and watching the sunrise paint the snow-capped peaks in shades of orange and pink. The trek to Dayara is considered easy to moderate, starting from the village of Barsu or Raithal. While the trail through oak and rhododendron forests is enchanting, the reward is the campsite in the open meadow, a truly unforgettable experience. Most trekking operators provide full camping services, including tents, warm sleeping bags, and meals, making it accessible even for families and first-timers with a good fitness level.
Kedarkantha: The Quintessential Winter Trek
If there's one trek that has become synonymous with winter camping, it's Kedarkantha. Its popularity stems from its accessibility, manageable difficulty, and some of the prettiest campsites in the Himalayas. The trek usually begins from Sankri village and takes you through dense pine forests to campsites like Juda-ka-Talab, a frozen lake that looks like a scene from a fairy tale. The Kedarkantha Base Camp, set in an open meadow above 11,000 feet, offers a direct view of the summit and surrounding snow peaks. Camping here is a lesson in high-altitude living, with temperatures often dropping well below freezing at night. However, the thrill of the pre-dawn summit push and the 360-degree panorama of peaks like Swargarohini and Black Peak from the 12,500-foot summit make every cold moment worthwhile.
Chopta: The Mini Switzerland of India
Known for its lush meadows and 360-degree Himalayan views, Chopta is a spectacular destination for winter camping. Situated within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, this region gets blanketed in thick snow, making it a serene and picturesque escape. Most organised camps are located in areas like Baniyakund, just below Chopta, offering a perfect blend of wilderness and accessibility. From your tent, you can enjoy stunning views of major peaks like Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Chaukhamba. Chopta also serves as the base for the trek to Tungnath, the world's highest Shiva temple, and further to Chandrashila peak for a breathtaking sunrise view. While you can pitch your own tent, opting for an established campsite is recommended for safety and convenience, especially as night temperatures can plummet.
Nag Tibba: The Perfect Weekend Escape
For those in Delhi and surrounding areas looking for a quick winter adventure without a long commitment, Nag Tibba is the answer. As the highest peak in the lower Garhwal Himalayas, this two-day trek is incredibly accessible and ideal for beginners. The trail starts from Pantwari village, a few hours' drive from Dehradun, and winds through forests of oak and deodar. Camping is usually done at the Nag Tibba base camp, where you are rewarded with panoramic views of the Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Gangotri ranges. During the winter months from December to March, the trail is often covered in snow, offering the thrill of a proper snow trek within a weekend's timeframe. Its gentle terrain and short duration make it a perfect introduction to the joys and challenges of Himalayan winter camping.
Auli: Camping with a View
While famous as India's premier skiing destination, Auli also offers fantastic winter camping opportunities. Imagine waking up in a tent to a panoramic view of Nanda Devi, India's second-highest peak. Camping in Auli, especially from November to February, means being surrounded by snow-covered slopes and dense forests of pine and oak. Several operators offer campsite facilities ranging from basic dome tents to more luxurious 'glamping' setups, complete with proper bedding. Located about a day's drive from Dehradun, it's a relatively accessible spot for experiencing a true white winter. Beyond just camping, you can indulge in skiing or simply enjoy the stunning mountain views from the comfort of your snowy abode.
