Who is Nico Paz?
Nicolás 'Nico' Paz is an attacking midfielder currently starring for Italian Serie A club Como. Born in Spain to an Argentine father, former international footballer Pablo Paz, he chose to represent his father's nation. After developing in Real Madrid's
famed youth academy, La Fábrica, Paz moved to Como in 2024. The move has proven to be a masterstroke, giving him the platform to evolve from a promising youngster into one of Europe's most watched talents. Now wearing the number 10 shirt, he has become a central figure in a Como side managed by Cesc Fàbregas, even competing in the Champions League.
The Inevitable Comparison
Any left-footed, technically gifted Argentine attacker will inevitably draw comparisons to Lionel Messi. It is a label that has proven to be more of a burden than a blessing for many talented players over the years. Paz, however, possesses many of the raw ingredients that fuel such talk. He is a phenomenal dribbler, has a low centre of gravity for his 1.85m frame, and showcases exceptional vision and passing range. Unlike many flair players, he also possesses a surprising physicality and defensive work rate, making him a more complete modern midfielder. But as players who were once dubbed the 'next Messi' have noted, such comparisons can create unrealistic expectations.
A Storming Start to the Season
The hype around Paz has reached fever pitch in late 2026. His recent performance in the UEFA Champions League was a statement to the world. On October 21, he scored two goals and provided an assist in Como's stunning 4-1 victory over Manchester United. The display was hailed across Italian and European media, with many questioning why a giant like Real Madrid let him go, even though they retain a buy-back clause. This wasn't a one-off performance; it followed a goal and assist against Fiorentina and two assists against RB Leipzig in the same competition, cementing his reputation as a big-game player.
Argentina's Next Chapter
For the Argentine national team, Paz represents a bridge to the future. Coach Lionel Scaloni, known for trusting young talent, handed Paz his senior debut in October 2024, where he recorded an assist for Messi himself. He was part of Argentina's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the team finished as runners-up. His integration signals a gradual evolution for the world champions, blending the experienced core with fresh, unpredictable talent. Paz offers a different dimension to the existing midfield; he is a creative specialist who can unlock defences with a moment of individual brilliance, a quality that will be vital in the post-Messi era.
