The Six-Week Experiment
Scientists at Columbia University recently decided to investigate the effects of mild, chronic sleep loss—the kind many of us experience daily. They recruited a group of adults who typically slept a healthy seven to eight hours a night. For six weeks,
these participants were asked to go to bed 90 minutes later than usual, effectively cutting their sleep time by about 80 minutes each night. For another six weeks, they followed their normal sleep schedule. The researchers tracked their weight, activity levels, and body composition throughout the study. The results were subtle but significant: during the sleep-restricted phase, participants gained, on average, a pound. While one pound in six weeks might not sound alarming, study leader Marie-Pierre St-Onge noted that this pattern, when extended over a year, could lead to clinically meaningful weight gain and associated health risks.
The Sedentary Shift
Interestingly, the weight gain wasn't just about what people were eating. A key finding from the Columbia study was a change in behaviour. When participants were sleep-deprived, they became more sedentary. On average, their inactive time increased by about 17 minutes per day. For men and postmenopausal women, that number jumped to nearly 30 minutes. This makes intuitive sense. When you're tired, your motivation to exercise, take the stairs, or even just move around dwindles. You're more likely to opt for the couch over a walk. This decrease in physical activity means you're burning fewer calories throughout the day, which, compounded over weeks and months, can easily lead to weight gain. The study shows that sleep loss doesn't just make you feel tired; it fundamentally changes how you spend your waking hours.
Your Hunger Hormones on Less Sleep
Beyond making us less active, a lack of sleep wages a silent war on our hormones, specifically two that regulate appetite: ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin is known as the 'hunger hormone'; it's produced in the stomach and signals to your brain that it's time to eat. Leptin, produced by fat cells, does the opposite—it signals satiety, telling your brain you're full. Numerous studies have shown that when you don't get enough sleep, this delicate balance is thrown into chaos. Ghrelin levels tend to rise, while leptin levels fall. The result? You feel hungrier more often and less satisfied after you eat, creating a perfect storm for overconsumption and weight gain.
The Craving for Comfort
Sleep deprivation also impacts the part of your brain responsible for decision-making and impulse control. When you're running on empty, your brain's reward centres light up more intensely in response to food. Worse, you’re not just hungrier in general—you’re hungrier for specific kinds of food. Research shows that tired individuals are more likely to crave high-calorie, high-carbohydrate, and processed foods. Suddenly, that plate of biryani or a box of sweets becomes far more appealing than a simple dal and salad. This is your brain’s desperate attempt to find a quick source of energy to overcome fatigue. Combined with the hormonal drive to eat more and the reduced physical activity, it creates a powerful cycle that can sabotage even the best dietary intentions.
Reclaiming Your Rest
The good news is that this connection works both ways. Prioritising sleep can be a powerful tool for maintaining a healthy weight and overall well-being. Improving your sleep hygiene doesn't have to be complicated. Start by establishing a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends. Create a relaxing bedtime routine—read a book, take a warm bath, or listen to calming music. Ensure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool. It is also important to avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and screens for at least an hour before bed. Think of sleep not as a luxury, but as a non-negotiable pillar of your health, just as important as diet and exercise.
