An Introduction to Your Adventure
This itinerary focuses on the Kedarkantha trek in Uttarakhand, one of India's most beloved summit climbs, especially for those new to trekking. Known as a top winter trek, its trails are accessible and offer breathtaking rewards, from snow-dusted pine
forests to a 360-degree view of famous Himalayan peaks from the summit. This plan is structured for a five-day trip starting and ending in Dehradun, making it an efficient yet powerful Himalayan experience. It’s considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for first-time trekkers with a basic level of fitness.
Day 1: The Scenic Drive to Base Camp
Your journey begins in Dehradun, from where you'll embark on a picturesque 8-10 hour drive to Sankri, a small village that serves as the base camp for numerous treks. The route itself is an experience, winding through Mussoorie and along river valleys. Upon reaching Sankri, located at an altitude of about 6,400 feet, you'll check into a local guesthouse or homestay. This first evening is crucial for acclimatisation. Use this time to meet your trek leader, get briefed on the days ahead, and enjoy a warm Garhwali meal before resting up for the adventure.
Day 2: First Steps into the Wild
Today, the trek officially begins. After breakfast in Sankri, you'll start the 4-5 hour ascent towards Juda Ka Talab, your first campsite. The trail covers roughly 4 kilometres, taking you through dense forests of pine and maple trees. Juda Ka Talab, situated at around 9,100 feet, is a stunning high-altitude lake that often freezes over in winter, creating a magical setting for your first night of camping under the stars. The gentle climb is a perfect introduction to trekking, allowing your body to slowly adjust to the altitude.
Day 3: Gaining Altitude Towards the Peak
From Juda Ka Talab, the trek continues towards the Kedarkantha Base Camp. Today's walk is shorter, typically taking about 3-4 hours to cover a distance of around 4 kilometres, but it involves a steady climb to an altitude of 11,250 feet. As you ascend, the tree line begins to recede, opening up to expansive meadows and offering your first clear views of the snow-capped peaks that dominate the horizon. The evening is spent preparing for the summit push. You'll have an early dinner and get to bed, as the final ascent starts before dawn.
Day 4: The Summit and a Victorious Descent
This is the day you've been waiting for. The push for the Kedarkantha summit, at 12,500 feet, begins in the early hours of the morning to ensure you reach the top in time for a spectacular sunrise. From the summit, you are rewarded with panoramic views of several prominent Himalayan peaks, including Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak. After soaking in the incredible vista, you will begin the long descent. The return journey will take you past the base camp and down to a new campsite, often Hargaon, which sits at around 8,900 feet. This makes for a long but deeply rewarding day of trekking.
Day 5: The Final Walk and Journey Home
The final day involves a relatively easy 3-4 hour trek from your campsite back down to the village of Sankri. The 6-kilometre trail winds through forests and farmlands, giving you one last chance to immerse yourself in the mountain scenery. Once you arrive in Sankri, you will board your vehicle for the 9-10 hour drive back to Dehradun, filled with memories of the peaks you’ve conquered and the serene landscapes you've witnessed. You will typically reach Dehradun by late evening, marking the end of your whirlwind Himalayan adventure.
