High humidity directly sabotages your body's natural ability to cool down, a critical process for initiating and maintaining sleep. Your body’s primary cooling mechanism is sweating. As sweat evaporates from your skin, it releases heat. However, when
the air is already saturated with moisture—as it is during the monsoon—evaporation slows down significantly. This leaves you feeling clammy and overheated, preventing your core body temperature from dropping, which is a key biological signal for your brain to transition into sleep. Studies show that high humidity can increase wakefulness and reduce the time spent in the most restorative stages of sleep: deep sleep and REM sleep.
An Unseen Threat: Allergens and Air Quality
Beyond the immediate discomfort, high humidity creates a perfect breeding ground for indoor allergens that can further disrupt your sleep. Mold, mildew, and dust mites thrive in damp conditions, with humidity levels above 50-60% being particularly problematic. These microscopic organisms can trigger or worsen allergies and asthma, leading to symptoms like coughing, sneezing, congestion, and breathing difficulties that make a peaceful night's rest nearly impossible. One of the most effective tools for combating monsoon humidity is a dehumidifier. Optimise Your Sleep Environment
Simple changes to your bedroom setup can make a significant difference. Ensure good ventilation by opening windows on less humid days to allow fresh air to circulate and reduce moisture buildup. Choose bedding and sleepwear made from light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These materials are much better at wicking moisture away from your body compared to synthetic fabrics that trap heat and sweat. Using a waterproof mattress protector can also prevent moisture from seeping into your mattress, which helps prevent mold and extends its life.
Adjust Your Pre-Sleep Routine
Your habits before bed can also help counteract the effects of a humid night. A cool shower shortly before sleep can help lower your body temperature, making it easier to drift off. It also washes away the sweat and stickiness from the day. Staying hydrated is important, but try to avoid drinking large amounts of liquid right before bed to prevent sleep-disrupting trips to the bathroom. Also, consider that the lack of sunlight on cloudy monsoon days can increase the body's production of melatonin, the sleep hormone, making you feel sluggish during the day and potentially disrupting your night-time sleep cycle.
