Ensure Your KYC is Up to Date
Know Your Customer (KYC) is a mandatory verification process for all bank accounts. If your details haven't been updated in a while, your bank could place restrictions on your account, limiting transactions or even freezing it. According to RBI guidelines,
periodic KYC updates are required for all customers. For low-risk customers, this is typically once every ten years, but for high-risk customers, it's every two. With recent rule changes, banks are now required to send multiple reminders before taking action. However, with the festive rush, it's better to be proactive. You can now often complete the process online via video KYC or by submitting a self-declaration if there are no changes, saving you a trip to the branch. Checking your KYC status now ensures your account remains fully functional for all your Diwali spending.
Know Your UPI Transaction Limits
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is the default payment mode for millions, but it has limits. The standard limit set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is typically ₹1 lakh per day, per account, and often capped at 20 transactions daily. However, individual banks can set their own, sometimes lower, limits. During Diwali, with multiple large purchases for gifts, electronics, and home decor, it's surprisingly easy to hit this ceiling. A transaction failing because you've exceeded your daily limit is a common issue during festive sales. Check your bank's specific UPI limits through your banking or UPI app. If you anticipate heavy spending, plan your purchases over a couple of days or use other methods like credit cards or NEFT for larger payments.
Verify Your Registered Mobile Number
Your registered mobile number is the key to your digital banking security. Every online transaction, from UPI payments to card purchases, requires a One-Time Password (OTP) sent to this number. If you've recently changed your number and haven't updated it with your bank, you will not receive these crucial OTPs, and your payments will fail. More importantly, if your old number is reassigned to someone else, they could potentially receive your transaction alerts and OTPs, creating a serious security risk. Updating your number can be done at a branch or, for some banks, at an ATM. It usually takes 1-3 working days, so don't leave this crucial update for the last minute.
Check for Account Inactivity
Have a bank account you haven't used in a while? If an account has seen no customer-initiated transactions for two years, banks classify it as 'inoperative' or 'dormant'. While the money is safe, the account itself faces restrictions. ATM withdrawals, online banking, and fund transfers might be blocked until you reactivate it. Reactivation requires fresh KYC verification, which can take time and often needs a branch visit. These dormant accounts are also prime targets for fraud. To avoid getting locked out of your funds just when you need them, make a small transaction—like a minimal deposit or withdrawal—in any account you haven't used for a year or more. This simple step keeps the account active and accessible.
Review Your Debit and Credit Card Status
While much of the focus is on UPI, don't forget your plastic cards. Before you start shopping, take a quick look at your debit and credit cards. Check the expiry date to ensure they're valid throughout the festive season. Also, if you plan on buying from international websites, make sure international transactions are enabled on your card. Many banks now require you to manually enable this feature through your net banking portal or mobile app as a security measure. Trying to make an international purchase with this feature turned off will result in an immediate decline. A quick check of these settings can save you from a frustrating abandoned cart.
