looked on course for victory. Manish Pandey anchored the chase with 48, but his dismissal tilted the game. It all came down to the final over, with India needing eight runs and the master finisher, Dhoni, on strike. However, Neville Madziva bowled a brilliant last over, conceding just five runs and dismissing Dhoni on the final ball, securing a shocking two-run victory for the hosts.
Zimbabwe's First T20I Victory: Harare, 2015
A year earlier, in 2015, Zimbabwe registered their first-ever T20I win against India, again at the Harare Sports Club. After being put in to bat, Zimbabwe scored 145/7, with Chamu Chibhabha top-scoring with a brilliant 67 off 51 balls. The chase for an Indian team led by Ajinkya Rahane faltered from the start. Despite a fighting 42 from Robin Uthappa, India's batting lineup couldn't handle the disciplined bowling from the Zimbabwean spinners, especially Graeme Cremer, who took 3 wickets. India fell short by 10 runs, ending their innings at 135/9 and giving Zimbabwe a historic win to level the two-match series 1-1.
India's Last-Over Escape: Harare, 2016
Just days after their stunning two-run loss in 2016, India found themselves in another nail-biter in the series decider. This time, India was defending a modest total of 138/6. The match swung back and forth, with Zimbabwe needing 21 runs from the final two overs. The game looked to be slipping away from India, but a tight penultimate over from Jasprit Bumrah left Zimbabwe needing four runs off the final ball, to be bowled by debutant Barinder Sran. Sran held his nerve, preventing the boundary and securing a tense three-run victory for India, allowing them to clinch the series 2-1 in a dramatic finale.
Suryakumar's Masterclass at the World Cup: Melbourne, 2022
While not a nail-biter in the end, the 2022 T20 World Cup clash was dramatic for its sheer individual brilliance. India, batting first, were in a decent but not commanding position. Then, Suryakumar Yadav walked in and changed the game completely. He played an astonishing knock of 61 not out from just 25 balls, hitting an array of incredible shots all around the ground. His blitz powered India to a formidable total of 186/5. Zimbabwe's chase never got going as they collapsed to 36/5 against India's quality pace attack. Though a partnership between Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl offered some resistance, India ultimately sealed a massive 71-run victory.
A Shock to Start the Series: Harare, 2024
In the opening match of the 2024 tour, a young Indian side led by Shubman Gill was handed a stunning defeat. Zimbabwe, led by an inspired Sikandar Raza, successfully defended a paltry total of 115. India's chase crumbled under pressure, and they were bowled out for 102 in the final over, falling short by 13 runs. The defeat was a stark reminder of Zimbabwe's potential for giant-killing acts on their home turf. Although India came back strongly in the series, including a massive 100-run win in the second T20I where Abhishek Sharma scored a century, the first match stood out for its dramatic upset.
