At the forefront of India's private space push are the companies building the vehicles to get to orbit. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace made history in July 2026 by launching Vikram-1, the country's first privately developed orbital rocket. This successful
launch made India only the third country, after the U.S. and China, to have a private company achieve orbital flight. The Vikram series of rockets is designed to provide cost-effective launch services for the booming small satellite market. Another key player, Agnikul Cosmos, incubated at IIT-Madras, has pioneered a different approach. In May 2024, it successfully launched a test flight of its Agnibaan SOrTeD, a vehicle powered by the world's first single-piece, 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engine. This support, combined with new policies allowing for greater foreign direct investment, has de-risked the sector and attracted hundreds of millions of dollars in private capital. The number of Indian space startups has surged from just one in 2014 to over 400 in 2026, a clear sign that the ecosystem is thriving.
