A Boost for Konkan Connectivity
Indian Railways has launched a new daily express service connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with Sawantwadi Road in the southern Konkan region. This move directly addresses the high demand for better rail links, especially
for those planning weekend trips to popular destinations like Kankavli, Kudal, and the tourist hub of Sawantwadi. The service is expected to significantly benefit tourists, daily commuters, and families visiting their hometowns, particularly by reducing the passenger load on other Konkan-bound trains that often face heavy bookings. Spanning a distance of about 510 kilometers, the train aims to make the picturesque Konkan coast more accessible than ever.
Timings Tailored for Weekend Warriors
The key to this new service's appeal is its schedule, which appears crafted for the typical weekend holidaymaker. The train, numbered 15087 on its journey from Mumbai, is scheduled for an overnight departure from CSMT at 11:55 PM. This late-night timing allows travellers to complete a full day of work on Friday before heading to the station. The train is slated to reach Sawantwadi Road the following afternoon at 2:15 PM, giving passengers ample time to check into their accommodations and begin their weekend. For the return journey, the train (No. 15088) departs from Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 PM, arriving back at CSMT by 6:40 AM the next morning. This schedule allows for a full day of sightseeing on Sunday before the comfortable overnight journey back to Mumbai, just in time for the start of the new week.
Route, Halts, and Coach Comfort
The new express train will feature a mix of coach classes to cater to different budgets and comfort levels. The composition includes AC First Class, AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, sleeper class, and general second class coaches, ensuring a wide range of options for passengers. The route is extensive, with 22 planned stops that connect numerous important towns across the Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. Major halts include Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Roha, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal, providing comprehensive connectivity along the entire corridor. This wide network of stops is designed to improve access not only for tourists heading to beaches and forts but also for students and business travellers.
A Welcome Addition to a Scenic Route
The Mumbai-Konkan route is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, passing through the verdant Western Ghats. While this specific daily express offers conventional coaches, travellers on the Konkan line also have the option of experiencing this beauty through Vistadome coaches on other trains like the Dadar-Madgaon Jan Shatabdi Express. These special coaches feature large glass windows and a glass roof, offering panoramic views of the lush landscapes, waterfalls, and tunnels that define the journey. The introduction of the new daily CSMT-Sawantwadi service complements existing options by focusing on a practical, reliable, and frequent connection.
