The Goldilocks Factor of Late Rain
For the rabi season, which includes vital crops like wheat, gram, and mustard, September's rain is a delicate balance. It's a classic Goldilocks scenario: not too much, not too little. Ideal end-of-monsoon showers recharge soil moisture, creating a perfect
seedbed for sowing that typically begins in October. This residual moisture is essential for the germination and early growth of crops, particularly in regions with limited irrigation. A good spell of September rain can reduce farmers' dependence on irrigation, lower input costs, and set the stage for a healthy harvest. However, the 2026 monsoon has been uneven, with the country facing an overall seasonal deficit of around 15% as of mid-September. This makes the final rains even more significant.
The Risks of Too Much or Too Little
While some rain is welcome, excessive downpours in late September can be just as damaging as a deficit. Heavy rains can delay the harvesting of late-sown kharif (summer) crops, pushing back the timeline for rabi field preparation. While recent rains have led to some recovery, the national water storage in India's major reservoirs was still below the long-term average as of early September. The situation is particularly concerning in the southern region. Healthy reservoir levels are crucial to sustain crops through the dry winter months, especially if the initial soil moisture is inadequate. A combination of poor residual moisture and low reservoir levels could pose a serious threat to crop yields. The government has prepared contingency plans for hundreds of districts identified as vulnerable due to low irrigation coverage and rainfall deficits.
