Review Your Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs)
Your EMIs are likely one of your most significant monthly outflows. The start of a new quarter is an excellent opportunity to review them. First, ensure all payments are on schedule to protect your credit score. Missed payments can now be reported to credit bureaus
within a week, impacting your score much faster. For those with floating-rate loans, check if recent repo rate changes have affected your interest burden. If your finances allow, consider making a partial prepayment. Even a small prepayment can reduce your principal, which in turn lowers the total interest paid over the loan's tenure and can shorten the repayment period. It's also a good time to check your loan statement for any discrepancies in charges.
Assess Your Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs)
A monthly review of your SIPs is a healthy habit. While SIPs are designed for long-term wealth creation and should not be tinkered with based on short-term market noise, a periodic check-in is crucial. Assess the performance of your mutual fund schemes against their benchmarks. This isn't about panicking and stopping your SIPs, but about ensuring your chosen funds are still aligned with your financial goals. If you have received a bonus or an increment, consider using a step-up SIP to increase your monthly contribution. A small annual increase in your SIP amount can significantly boost your final corpus due to the power of compounding.
Check Your Fixed Deposits (FDs)
Fixed deposits are a staple for many conservative investors, but a 'set it and forget it' approach can be costly. Check if any of your FDs are maturing this month. Before letting it auto-renew, compare the interest rate your bank is offering with rates from other banks. Small finance banks often offer higher interest rates than public sector or large private banks, with some offering up to 8.50% for senior citizens as of October 2026. For tax-saving FDs, which come with a five-year lock-in, ensure you are maximising the deduction under Section 80C. Keeping an eye on maturing FDs allows you to redeploy your capital for better returns.
Strengthen Your Digital Payment Habits
The convenience of UPI and other digital payments comes with risks. Make it a monthly habit to review your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorised transactions. With digital payment fraud on the rise, early detection is key. Always use strong, unique passwords for banking apps and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible. The RBI has mandated 2FA for all digital payment transactions to enhance security. Avoid conducting financial transactions on public Wi-Fi networks, which are often unsecured. Finally, be vigilant about phishing scams. Never share your PIN, OTP, or CVV with anyone. Regular security checks can save you from significant financial loss.
Conduct a Broader Portfolio Review
While you're focused on the specifics, take a step back and look at the bigger picture. A quarterly check is a good time to review your overall investment portfolio. Are you still comfortable with your asset allocation between equity and debt? Have your financial goals changed? This is also an opportune moment to check your credit card usage. Review your monthly statements for any new fees or changes in reward point structures. Some banks have recently updated rules on lounge access and rewards on certain spending categories. Staying informed about these changes ensures you are using your financial products optimally and that your overall financial plan remains aligned with your life goals.
