The Post-Festive Price Shock
If you're finding that hotel rates for your winter escape look unusually high, you are not alone. A combination of factors is creating a perfect storm for your travel budget. After two years of intermittent travel, pent-up demand is at an all-time high, with
festive season bookings already seeing a significant uptick. Travel platforms are reporting booking growth of three to four times for the October to December quarter. This demand is meeting the peak tourist season for many parts of India, from the beaches of Goa to the royal palaces of Rajasthan, when weather is most favourable. According to an analysis by AI-powered pricing firm Sciative Solutions, mid-scale hotel rates are expected to rise by nearly 27% after Diwali, with premium properties seeing a similar spike. This surge is driven by a strong desire for festive and year-end breaks, pushing prices higher for those who have not booked well in advance.
Popular Destinations Hit Hardest
While prices are rising broadly, certain hotspots are feeling the pressure more than others. Goa is expected to see the steepest price increases, with premium hotel rates projected to climb by almost 42% in the post-Diwali period. The state remains one of the most searched-for destinations for the festive season, reflecting its enduring popularity. Other traditional winter favourites like Rajasthan's heritage cities (Udaipur, Jaisalmer) and the Himalayan hill stations of Himachal Pradesh are also experiencing significant rate hikes as they enter their prime season. Interestingly, major business hubs like Delhi and Mumbai have also emerged as the country's leading markets for hotel revenue this year, overtaking leisure spots like Ranthambore and Rishikesh for the first time since the pandemic, indicating a full-fledged revival of all forms of travel.
Smart Strategies for Last-Minute Bookings
Facing high prices doesn't mean you have to cancel your trip. It just means you need to be a smarter traveler. The most effective tool at your disposal is flexibility. If you can travel mid-week, such as on a Tuesday or Wednesday, you will often find lower rates as you avoid the weekend rush of leisure travelers. Similarly, being flexible with your location can unlock huge savings. Instead of staying in the absolute heart of a tourist hotspot, consider properties just a 15-minute drive away. These hotels are often newer, more affordable, and just as comfortable. Lastly, don't just book the first hotel you see. Use multiple booking platforms to compare prices for the same property, as some may have negotiated better rates.
Think Outside the Traditional Toolbox
Beyond basic flexibility, a few other tactics can help. Drive-to holidays are becoming increasingly popular thanks to improved highway connectivity. Consider regional circuits that are less crowded, such as the Ooty-Wayanad or Kasauli-Chail-Kufri routes. Instead of a traditional hotel, look into boutique properties, homestays, or vacation rentals, which can offer better value and a more local experience. Another underused strategy is to check for direct booking benefits. Many hotels offer small discounts, complimentary breakfast, or other perks for booking directly on their website, as it saves them commission fees. Finally, don't forget your loyalty points. If you have accumulated points with hotel chains or on credit cards, now is the perfect time to redeem them and offset the high cash tariffs.
