Documents You Will Need
While the process is simpler, you still need to have your documents in order. For a smooth application, ensure you have clear, scanned copies of the following: a valid photo ID like an Aadhaar card or passport, a recent passport-sized photograph, and proof of your travel arrangements, including confirmed flight or ship tickets and accommodation bookings. The online portal has specific requirements for file size and format, so it is important to check these before uploading to avoid rejection. Foreign nationals will need their valid passport and an Indian visa.
The Timeline: How Long Does It Really Take?
This is the most critical part of planning. The official guideline states that applications should be submitted at least 14 days before the intended travel date to allow for processing. However, experienced travellers and tour operators recommend applying much earlier, ideally 30 to 45 days in advance, especially during the peak tourist season from October to May. While a standard tourist permit can take between 7 to 10 working days, peak season demand can add delays.
