A Window to the Western Ghats
Southern Railway has introduced a special Vistadome coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, promising passengers a front-row seat to one of South India’s most scenic routes. The journey is specifically designed to showcase the breathtaking beauty of the Sengottai-Punalur
ghat section, a winding corridor through the Western Ghats that connects Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Passengers can soak in views of verdant hills, dense forests, and the picturesque Aryankavu pass. This new service aims to boost regional tourism by transforming a regular train journey into a captivating sightseeing experience.
What Makes it 'Panoramic'?
The star of the show is the Executive Vistadome AC coach. These specially designed carriages are engineered for sightseeing. They feature extra-large glass windows that provide an uninterrupted view of the landscape, along with a transparent glass roof for a truly immersive experience. The coach contains 44 executive seats that can rotate, allowing travellers to face the direction of the best scenery. This design ensures that every passenger gets to fully appreciate the natural splendour of the route, from winding tracks to distant mountain vistas. Wi-Fi connectivity is also available on board.
The Schedule Explained
The Vistadome coach is attached to Train Nos. 16327/16328 (Madurai-Guruvayur-Madurai Express). The service from Madurai begins on October 22, 2026, while the return journey from Guruvayur starts on October 23, 2026. The headline's reference to the October 23 start date marks the beginning of the return leg of this new service, completing the round-trip offering for tourists and pilgrims. The service is being introduced on a temporary or trial basis, currently scheduled to run until mid-January 2027. Its continuation will depend on passenger response.
