This train journey from Mettupalayam to the popular hill station of Ooty is unique in India, employing a historic rack and pinion system to conquer Asia's steepest track. Over five hours, the train ascends from 326 metres to 2,203 metres, offering breathtaking vistas of lush tea plantations, dense forests, and mist-covered mountains. The route features 16 tunnels and 250 bridges, with the section between Mettupalayam and Coonoor being particularly celebrated for its scenic beauty. It’s a fairy-tale ride through some of South India’s most stunning landscapes.
The Eastern Marvel: Darjeeling's Himalayan Railway
The first of India's mountain railways to receive the UNESCO World Heritage tag, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway offers an iconic travel experience. This narrow-gauge 'toy train' travels 88 kilometres from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling, climbing to an altitude of over 2,200 metres. The journey is famed for its engineering marvels, including six zig-zags and five loops, most notably the Batasia Loop. The Batasia Loop provides a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of Darjeeling with the snow-capped Kanchenjunga in the background. Passing through bustling market towns and serene tea gardens, the ride culminates at Ghum, India's highest railway station.
The Coastal Quest: Mumbai to Goa
The Konkan Railway is an ode to India's magnificent western coastline. Stretching from Maharashtra through Goa and to Karnataka, this route is a modern engineering marvel that passes through 92 tunnels and over 2,000 bridges. A journey from Mumbai to Goa on trains like the Mandovi Express or Tejas Express treats passengers to a visual feast of the Sahyadri mountains on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other. The landscape is a vibrant tapestry of lush paddy fields, coconut groves, and small villages. During the monsoon, the journey becomes even more magical, with cascading waterfalls like the famous Dudhsagar Falls often visible from the tracks.
The Sea Bridge Spectacle: Mandapam to Rameswaram

The highlight of this route is crossing the historic Pamban Bridge, India's first sea bridge, which opened in 1914. With over 950 bridges and just two tunnels, the train winds its way through the picturesque valley at a leisurely pace. The route, which is on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status, provides an authentic glimpse into the tranquil life of the Himalayan foothills, making it a serene and captivating experience.
